“Chou Loke Ming, emeritus professor at the National University of Singapore’s Department of Biological Sciences, believes that mature marine habitats like reefs, seagrass and mangroves qualify as natural heritage sites. These have consistently served the ecosystem in valuable ways, such as by acting as nurseries supporting fish populations and absorbing planet-warming carbon dioxide.
The veteran marine scientist called for a new mindset on reclamation, where Singapore works towards building with nature instead of at the expense of it.
For instance, the reclamation boundary could be made flexible to avoid burying most of these habitats, he suggested.”

For her PhD work, ecologist Fung Tze-Kwan uncovered the relationships between birds and trees, and she will shares stories from the field and the surprising wildlife discoveries she made.
Her talk is followed by a panel discussion who will share insights into Singapore's native birdlife, how research is helping to inform long-term forest restoration and conservation policy, and how everyday citizens can play a role in supporting biodiversity conservation in Singapore.

| 17 | NUS Toddycats has increased lightning risk vigilance. We’d already made adjustments for heat a few years ago, and now there’s this.
We’ve been warned by the recent tragic lightning fatalities in the Johor Straits at Pasir Ris and Lim Chu Kang, and also by inland strike incidents at Bartley and Bukit Batok.
The conditions for lightning will only increase with that high probability super El Niño adding on to existing stressors.
Be sure to monitor the heat, storms and lightning with the MyNEA app but also, use your ears!

““Even for Singapore, a forecast cannot pinpoint exactly where a strike will occur. Therefore, we should not rely solely on government warnings or ignore the risks.

And also, “Wait at least 30 minutes after thunder is last heard before resuming outdoor activities.”

It’s the most accessible mangrove in the southwest and right outside an MRT. We shall miss it — and have to relocate two classes.

In conjunction with Youth Day, Ocean Futures Youth Forum brings together a new generation of advocates, educators, and innovators to reimagine our relationship with the ocean. Through a dynamic mix of talks and open dialogue, the forum foregrounds how youth-led initiatives are responding to urgent challenges facing marine ecosystems, from biodiversity loss to marine pollution. Across presentations, Ocean Futures moves between multidisciplinary approaches of engineering technology, wildlife conservation and urban planning to examine alternative methods of care and advocacy.
Ocean Futures features youth advocates and community leaders from Kaia Initiative, LepakInSG, NTU Mecatron, NUS Toddycats! and Our Singapore Reefs, each bringing distinct perspectives on environmental action and engagement.
