Yesterday at Musikfest Bremen, the Utopia Orchestra and Choir led by Teodor Currentzis performed Brahms's A German Requiem with soprano Iveta Simonyan and baritone Matthias Winckhler.
It was a special experience to bring the Requiem to St. Peter's Cathedral - the same place where Brahms conducted its premiere in 1868.

Teodor Currentzis on the programme for the concert at the Salzburg Festival on 19 August:
'Music is made of silence. It's a sequence of silence in different lengths and qualities. And it's quite a fundamental question how you deal with the quality of silence.
Now, Kurtag writes in a very sibylline way, I would say, hermetic way. [..] So it's a kind of precise ancient manuscript. This is the idea.
[…]
In our programme, this is combined with Alban Berg's Concerto, that is also a tribute to silence, but that of a different kind, and the masterpiece of Johannes Brahms, Ein deutsches Requiem, that is, in fact, a tractate about what the big silence means. Is there a big silence at all, or is it our imagination that creates that?'
