. What is an SSL certificate? It is a certificate that can be verified as coming form a trusted source. They also come with an encryption key pair, or a public and a private key, just like PGP and GPG used for emails and other encryption needs. How is the SSL certificate used? 1. Browser connects to a website secured with SSL. Browser requests that the server identify itself. 2. Server sends a copy of its SSL Certificate, including the server’s public key. 3. Browser checks the certificate root against a list of trusted CAs and that it is valid for the website that it is connecting to. If trustworthy it creates, encrypts, and sends back a symmetric session key using the server’s public key. 4. Server decrypts the symmetric session key using its private key and sends back an acknowledgement encrypted with the session key to start the encrypted session. 5. Uninstall GNOME Desktop From Linux Mint If you wish to uninstall GNOME Desktop from Linux Mint for any reason, then restart your system and choose any desktop environment other than GNOME and login to your system. NOTE: Make sure you have another desktop environment installed and working before you remove Gnome Shell. Now, run the following commands in order to uninstall GNOME Desktop: sudo apt remove gnome-shell sudo apt autoremove The above commands will remove GNOME Desktop from your Linux Mint system, but you’ll also need to restore the default Linux Mint login manager. Lightdm is the default display manager for Linux Mint, which was replaced by Gdm when you installed GNOME Desktop. Reconfigure the default display manager back to Lightdm using the following command: sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm Finally, restart the system. reboot After restarting, you’ll see your old Linux Mint login manager and if you try to change desktop environment before login (by clicking on the icon next to your username), you’ll see that GNOME is no longer there. Time to migrate away from anything Gnome. There are so many options out there that work great. My personal favorite is Mate running Compiz, but Compiz's time is limited because it runs on XOrg/X11, and most desktop environments seem to be moving towards Wayland.
