(From Phil Scanlan) VPN/TOR router with OpenWRT (FOSS) preinstalled I just bought this $70 router because it said it had VPN and TOR preconfigured. Plugged it in between my cable modem and existing WiFi router. This way it protects all devices connected to the network Took less then 5 minutes to set up. I turned off the wireless part because I did not need it. When I bought it, I planned to use it with a VPN, but I saw you could turn TOR on with one click and decided to try it as TOR is free. Everybody said TOR would be too slow, but it turned out to be plenty fast enough. Watched a Netflix movie on it with no problems. Only downside have noticed is CAPTCHA ( to prove you are not a bot) pops up more often then it did before - which while annoying is something I am prepared to put up with for now. Maybe it will become less of a press more people use these technologies. If it becomes to annoying, I can just turn on one of the vpns it is preconfigured for. The presence of software like Intel ME that can’t be disabled and is closed source is certainly a security concern. As you already probably know, it is a parallel operating system running on an isolated chip. I wouldn't try disabling it either. Although some enterprising people have disabled it (first link below). In the future, it'll just get harder and harder to disable. If you install the Nautilus file browser you can right-click and select "Encrypt" and then type in a password. The link below explains that further down the page. You can select the option to encrypt your home folder when you install Linux Mint or Ubuntu. There are 100's of Linux Distros out there, which seems scary, but for all practical purposes, there are only 3 distros that most of the other distros are based on. Those Distros are Debian, Arch, and Red Hat. Sure there are a few other base distros, but they're best left to those more familiar with Linux.
