. There are 3 ways that Linux distros get updated. These are known as 1. Fixed distros (security updates only) - more stable - more secure - older app versions w/out new app features - upgrades every 6months to 2yrs 2. Semi-Rolling Distros (security and 3rd party updates) - core distribution files are fixed - 3rd party apps are rolling 3. . The Flatpak package manager is a cross-distro package manager that can install the same packages on any distribution that supports it. Flatpak comes pre-installed, and pre-configured with the FlatHub repository in Linux Mint, but what about other distros that don't have it be default, such as Ubuntu? How do yo install Flatpak on those distributions? Flatpak installation is different for each distro. The best resource for installing Flatpak on various distros is at Flathub. You can go here, and click the icon for your distro, and it will give you detailed instructions on how to install it on your distribution. https://flatpak.org/setup/ For a nice quick overview on how to use Flatpak, go to this website: https://docs.flatpak.org/en/latest/using-flatpak.html FlatHub.org is the main Flatpak repository where you can browse available Flatpaks. From there you can download a ".flatpakref" file that you can double-click to install. .

. Tip of the Day (Ubuntu): Bind the "Windows Thumbnail Picker" to a mouse button that you never use. This will make for very fast windows switching, without ever having to touch the keyboard. Good mouse button choices are the forward button, thee back thumb buttons, or if you have a 10 button mouse, the thumb-down button is the best choice. back button = button 8 forward button= button 9 thumb-down button = button 10 1. Make sure xbindkeys is installed by typing: sudo apt install xbindkeys 2. Add xbindkeys to the startup applications list using "Gnome Tweaks", or "Startup Applications Preferences" depending on how new your Ubuntu is. 3. Add these lines to the .xbindkeysrc file in your home folder: (replace b:9 with b:8, b:9, or b:10 depending on which button you want to use) # Mouse Button 9 to Thumbnail Picker # For Gnome Shell 3 or 4 "xdotool key super" release + b:9 4. Restart xbindkeys by typing this in a terminal: killall xbindkeys xbindkeys 5. Click the button you chose to see it in action.

. Tip of the Day (Ubuntu): Install a windows tiling manager, and learn how to use it. The best tiling managers for Gnome so far are "ShellTile" (the one being used in the video) and "Tilling Assistant" because you can drag-n-drop windows into place, and if you resize a window, all the other windows resize automatically. "ShellTile" only works on single monitors. "Tiling Assistant" works on multiple monitors, but it does the annoying Win 10 thumbnail/icon thing for empty spaces. To install Gnome extensions, go to extensions.gnome.org, and search for the extension, click on it, and then turn it on to install it. Note: Ubuntu uses Gnome. This video was actually done in Linux Mint logged into the Gnome desktop.

. LXQt, which is a new, very lightweight desktop environment, has now released it's first major version, LXQt 1.0.0. This will work great on older equipment! . THE PinePhone PRO IS HERE! The next version of the PinePhone is being released. They have addressed the biggest issues (in my opinion) of heat generation and power consumption, and say enthusiasts can use the PinePhone Pro as a daily driver, if they're willing to deal with the software limitations. With MMS texts and video acceleration already having been proven, but not yet implemented in the original PinePhone, it shouldn't be long before this phone has the functionality.
