“Alan Rickman is talking about the new production of ‘Mephisto’ in which he plays the actor Hendrick Hofgen. It’s Saturday lunchtime and he has just finished rehearsals at the Barbican, a place he seems doomed never to leave. He looks scruffy in a fashionably actorish sort of way, with straggly hair, not at all like the bullish Klaus M. Brandauer in the not-to-be-mentioned film. Yet after his triumph as the Vicomte de Valmont in “Les Liaisons Dangereuses. Rickman is on of the hottest properties in town – a consequence of playing one of the coldest of bastards. He says he returned to the RSC in order to try something bigger and in casting him as Hofgen, director Adrian Noble has certainly given him that opportunity.“ Rickman says, “Almost the whole of the play is set on various stages, so I am constantly doing things onstage that I have just done offstage.It’s as though the dross of our lives is being turned into something for the audience to watch. By the end of the play the proscenium arch has shifted from the back of the stage to the front with the audience playing itself. But what resonance it will have in the Barbican is hard to say. English actors have all sorts of pluses but sometimes they don’t even know how to walk across the stage. An American dancer once said that “it’s a question of capturing the energy on its impulsive exit through the body. But of course that’s very abstract. “Alan Rickman has backed Bradford's bid to become the European City of Culture. He yesterday spoke with Councillor Barry Thorne between shooting the new film at City Hall. But Coun Thorne admitted to some trepidation before meeting Rickman: "He's a well-known Labour supporter and his wife's a Labour councillor in London. I asked if I could see him. He asked if I was Labour and when he was told I was, he said 'That's all right then'. He told me the last time he was here was 1991 and he was delighted with what had gone on in the city centre since then - Centenary Square and Waterstone's bookshop in the Wool Exchange. He was charming, very laid back. We talked quite a bit of politics and about what we were doing in Bradford. One thing he liked was that we were going for the European City of Culture award. He thought it was a good idea. For such a famous star he was incredibly friendly and relaxed." Rickman is here to star in Never Better, set in Keighley. In the film, Rickman plays a hairdresser who takes part in an international hairdressing contest at Keighley town hall. Behind the scenes of “Mesmer”, 11 November 1993 “The most beautiful day. Blue, clear skies and clean hard sunshine. Out to Versailles – a scene I fought to keep in the film. Strange to see Beatie walk towards us as Marie Antoinette in full sail. Roger is furious/sulking. He never wanted a French actor for Louis – Serge [Ridoux] really does have a strong accent. Roger breaks the lens cap on the BBC’s camera . . . The scene is done for a crowd of tourists and to a backing of gunfire . . . A burst of late sun gives us an extraordinary last show and we move to L’Abbaye Hotel in Paris . . .  Go to collect Roni & Isabelle H[uppert] for dinner with the rest of us . . . A pleasant evening. Diana Ohanian: “I met Alan Rickman on 26th February 2014, at the 100th Birthday of his aunt at a pub in Ealing about 2 years ago. He was more handsome than in any photo he has been in. His aunt (now nearly 102 years old) introduced me to Alan Rickman, who was sitting with his two brothers, a sister and his wife. I began speaking to him by saying that my son and I were great fans and I loved his acting in Die Hard, when he appeared as Hans Gruber. He said that was 25 years ago! I asked him what was he currently doing. He replied that he was directing a film with Kate Winslet as the leading actress. After speaking to him for a while, I asked him to sign an autograph for my son, which he did. He is showing the autograph in the photo I took from him, by covering his mouth and being cheeky. After that I asked him to lower the paper and he smiled and I took another photo of him, but the photo did not come out well. That was a brief encounter I had with Alan Rickman. His passing is surely a great loss for the film industry and I treasure my meeting with him.
