The Turkish Simple Present Tense, known as "Geniş Zaman," is used to describe general truths, habits, and routines. It is equivalent to the English Simple Present Tense.
Formation
To form the Simple Present Tense in Turkish, you add specific suffixes to the verb stem. The suffixes vary depending on the verb's root vowel and the subject.
Verb Conjugation
Let's use the verb "yapmak" (to do) as an example. The verb stem is "yap-".
Ben (I) -ar/-er (Yaparım - I do)
Sen (You, sing.) -arsın/-ersin (Yaparsın - You do)
O (He/She/It) -ar/-er (Yapar - He does)
Biz (We) -arız/-eriz (Yaparız - We do)
Siz (You, pl.) -arsınız/-ersiniz (Yaparsınız - You do)
Onlar (They) -arlar/-erler (Yaparlar - They do)
The choice between -ar and -er depends on vowel harmony rules in Turkish:
- Use "-ar" after hard vowels (a, ı, o, u)
- Use "-er" after soft vowels (e, i, ö, ü)
