Heparin Warfarin: What's the Difference? Anticoagulants like Heparin and Warfarin play a vital role in preventing blood clots from forming or getting worse. Here's a quick comparison to help you understand their unique characteristics: Heparin: Action: Inhibits the conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin, essential for clotting. β€’ Side Effects: Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia, injection site reactions, increased bleeding risk. β€’ Key Points: Safe during pregnancy, requires platelet count monitoring, and avoid massaging the injection site. Antidote: Protamine sulfate. Warfarin: Action: Interferes with the production of Vitamin K, which is crucial for forming clotting factors in the liver. Side Effects: Increased bleeding risk, hematoma formation, and purple toe syndrome. Key Points: Not safe during pregnancy, patients need consistent Vitamin K intake, and regular INR monitoring is required. Antidote: Vitamin K. Understanding these differences is essential for proper patient care and effective anticoagulation mnx
