Target Prelims 2026: Day 2 1. INS Surat: ●INS Surat is the fourth and final stealth guided missile destroyer under Project 15B, following INS Visakhapatnam, INS Mormugao, and INS Imphal, commissioned over the last three years. ●It represents an advanced iteration of the Kolkata-class destroyers built under Project 15A. ** India's First Al-Enabled Warship: Utilizes indigenously developed artificial intelligence solutions for enhanced operational efficiency. β—‹ Specifications: Displacement: 7,400 tonnes. β—‹ Advanced Armaments: Equipped with state-of-the-art surface-to-air missiles, anti-ship missiles, torpedoes, and modern sensors for network-centric warfare. 2. INS Vaghsheer: ** ● INS Vaghsheer is the 6th and final submarine of the modern Kalvari class built under Project 75, designed for stealth and versatility in naval operations. ● Kalvari class submarines take their names from decommissioned classes, including Kalvari, Khanderi, Karanj, and the Vela class (which included Vela, Vagir, Vagshir). β—‹ Based on the Scorpene Class: Developed from the Scorpene design by French defence major Naval Group and Spanish entity Navantia. β—‹ Silent Diesel-Electric System: Primarily "attack" or "hunter-killer" submarines, known as one of the world's most silent & versatile diesel-electric submarines. 3. PHAGE THERAPY: β€’ Recently, study found that the public accepts use of bacteria-killing viruses (Phage Therapy) as an alternative to antibiotics. β€’ Phage Therapy involves using Bacteriophages to treat bacterial infections. o Bacteriophages are viruses that infect and replicate only in bacterial cells. β€’ Significance: Unlikely to damage human cells due to significant differences in bacterial cells and human cells. ** Inherently non-toxic in nature. 4. Xenotransplantation: β€’ Procedure that involves the transplantation, implantation or infusion of non-human tissues or organs into human recipients. β€’ It includes: Live cells, tissues, or organs from a non-human animal source Body fluids, cells, tissues or organs that have had ex vivo contact with live nonhuman animal cells, tissues or organs. Generally pigs are preferred for xenotransplantation due to large litters and grow quickly. Also, they are comparatively easy to genetically modify, and are less likely to transmit infections. 5. FOOD FORTIFICATION: Deliberately increasing the content of one or more micronutrients in food or condiments (supplemental food). Regulated under Food Safety Standards (Fortification of Foods) Regulation, 2018. β€’ About Rice Fortification: It refers to adding FRK-containing FSSAI-prescribed micronutrients (Iron, Folic Acid, Vitamin B12) to normal Rice (Custom Milled Rice) in the ratio of 1:100. Coating, extrusion and dusting are key technologies. In India, extrusion technology is employed, where milled rice is pulverized and mixed with a premix. Biofortification is process of breeding nutrients into food crops. β€’ It can be achieved through agronomic practices (involves direct fertilisation of soil), conventional breeding or biotechnology-based approaches like genetic engineering and genome editing.

5. Black Holes: β€’ A black hole is a place in space where gravity pulls so much that even light can not get out. The gravity is so strong because matter has been squeezed into a tiny space. This can happen when a star is dying. β€’ Because no light can get out, people can't see black holes. They are invisible. Space telescopes with special tools can help find black holes. β€’ A black hole’s β€œsurface,” called its event horizon, defines the boundary where the velocity needed to escape exceeds the speed of light, which is the speed limit of the cosmos. Matter and radiation fall in, but they can’t get out. β€’ In 2019, astronomers using the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) β€” an international collaboration that networked eight ground-based radio telescopes into a single Earth-size dish β€” captured an image of a black hole for the first time. It appears as a dark circle silhouetted by an orbiting disk of hot, glowing matter. Gravitational Waves: β€’ Gravitational waves are invisible ripples that form when a star explodes in a supernova; when two big stars orbit each other; and when two black holes merge. β€’ Travelling at the speed of light, gravitational waves squeeze and stretch anything in their path. Gravitational waves were proposed by Albert Einstein in his General Theory of Relativity. β€’ It was only in 2015, however, that the first gravitational wave was actually detected β€” by Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory.

Target Prelims 2026: Day 1 1. Winter Diesel: β€’ India’s armed forces may soon be using winter diesel for operations in high altitude areas such as Ladakh. β€’ Winter diesel is a specialised fuel that was introduced by Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) last year specifically for high altitude regions and low-temperature regions such as Ladakh, where ordinary diesel can become unusable. β€’ It contains additives to maintain lower viscosity can be used in temperatures as low as -30Β°C and that besides a low pour point, it had higher cetane rating β€” an indicator is the combustion speed of diesel and compression needed for ignitionβ€” and lower sulphur content, which would lead to lower deposits in engines and better performance. 2. Sun’s Coronal Heating: β€’ Scientists have recently discovered tiny flashes of radio light emanating from all over the Sun, which they say could help in explaining the long-pending coronal heating problem. β€’ These radio lights or signals result from beams of electrons accelerated in the aftermath of a magnetic explosion on the Sun. Magnetic explosions have not been seen but these radio lights are the strongest evidence till date that the tiny magnetic explosions, originally referred to as β€˜nanoflares’ can indeed be heating up the corona. β€’ The solar corona, the outer layer of the Sun's atmosphere, is composed of extreme high temperature gas, known as plasma, with temperatures reaching millions of degrees Celsius. β€’ The corona is usually hidden by the bright light of the Sun's surface. That makes it difficult to see without using special instruments. However, the corona can be seen during a total solar eclipse. 3. Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI): β€’ India joined GPAI or Gee-Pay as a founding member to support the responsible and human-centric development and use of AI. β€’ GPAI is an international and multi-stakeholder initiative to guide the responsible development and use of AI, grounded in human rights, inclusion, diversity, innovation, and economic growth. β€’ India joined the league of leading economies including USA, UK, EU, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Republic of Korea, Singapore to launch the GPAI. β€’ GPAI will be supported by a Secretariat, to be hosted by Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in Paris, as well as by two Centers of Expertise- one each in Montreal and Paris. 4. Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe): β€’ Government has announced a new organisation, IN-SPACe, part of reforms to increase private participation in the space sector. β€’ IN-SPACe will provide a level playing field for private companies to use Indian space infrastructure. This centre will also hand-hold, promote and guide the private industries in space activities through encouraging policies and a friendly regulatory environment. β€’ IN-SPACe is supposed to be a facilitator, and also a regulator. It will act as an interface between ISRO and private parties, and assess how best to utilise India’s space resources and increase space-based activities.
