𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗶𝘀 𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗱𝘀? 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗔𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻 — 𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗼𝗽𝗵𝘆 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁. Before asking how we study something, we must ask what we believe about reality and knowledge. Here’s a concise lens on four core research paradigms shaping academic inquiry: 1. Positivism – Assumes a single, observable reality. Truth is out there, measurable, and objective. Predominantly used in natural and social sciences, it's the foundation for hypothesis-driven, data-centric research. 2.Interpretivism – Views reality as socially constructed. Researchers seek to understand context, meaning, and subjective experience. It thrives in qualitative domains where human behavior can't be reduced to numbers. 3.Critical Realism – A hybrid approach. While acknowledging an objective reality, it accepts that our understanding is mediated by social, cultural, and linguistic structures. It's ideal for unpacking complex causality and power dynamics. 4.Pragmatism – Dismisses the either/or debate. It’s action- and outcome-oriented, embracing both qualitative and quantitative tools. What matters most is what works to solve the problem at hand. These paradigms aren’t just academic—they shape how we interpret data, structure arguments, and influence change.
