Durban surf community sheds light on E. coli reports Members of the Durban surf community have set the record straight on claims that Durban beaches are unsafe to swim or surf in. This week, eThekwini Municipality released a statement on the city's beach water quality based on samples taken from both bathing and non-bathing beaches on December 11. To swim, or not to swim? This is yesterday, Tuesday 12th in our sunshine city ☀️ Featuring the Xpression team, who would like to show you, the ocean is safe 🏖 We understand it’s difficult when you’re not here at the beach every day, to discern the truth. We want you to know that our team is in the water every day, surfing, swimming and paddling and everyone is fit and healthy - and they have been for months. Ecoli testing is good. But there’s a hitch. Sampling happens once a week, on a Thursday and results get published on Monday. In that period of time, the water quality has changed. The reading published on Monday is not an accurate reflection of the ocean water quality on that day. Far from it. Here’s WHY.. We have to think about wind and tide when we look at these test results. Unfortunately no one is talking about these elements except us. Onshore wind is prevailing in summer, blowing from the NE. It makes the ocean rough and pushes in bluebottles - and anything else that’s ‘funky’ in the water like trash after rain or sewerage. That’s why if the wind is blowing onshore on the day of the sample, like Thursday 7th, we will typically see higher ecoli levels. The thing is, like last week, from Friday 8th, the wind has been offshore. And until today, every single day, offshore. This offshore wind pushes away bluebottles and cleans up the ocean very quickly making it smooth and calm. It also makes the surf great and that’s when you’ll see an ocean of surfers and swimmers here in Durban. This is when we do Surf Lessons and our Ocean SUP Sessions. If the water is tested on an offshore day, the test result will typically be around 100 - which is very safe. So let’s not look at the ecoli test results in isolation. Let’s assess what the weather was like on the day the water was tested. Let’s look at what has happened since. Let’s assess the bigger picture before creating so much confusion that everyone is afraid to enjoy the beauty and freedom of the beach. Please DM or call us anytime. A slew of dubious legislation being rushed through Parliament is ‘electioneering at its worst’ – legal expert The results of three separate, independent opinion polls released in October could point to the rationale behind the legislation being rushed through with little thought given to practical implementation or funding. The government is fast-tracking new legislation and legislative changes in what seems to be a blatant ploy to win over voters ahead of next year’s elections. The National Assembly (NA) has passed the highly contested Prevention and Combating of Hate Crimes and Hate Speech Bill now just needing President Cyril Ramaphosa’s signature. CONSTITUTIONAL CONCERNS ABOUT THE BILL’S DEFINITION OF “HATE SPEECH”: The Bill contravenes section 36 of the Constitution because it is: 1. Unnecessary as existing laws have already been successfully implemented in various criminal and civil cases of hate speech. 2. Overbroad: The Bill’s definition of “hate speech” is broader than the Constitution’s definition of hate speech, criminalising speech the Constitution sees as protected. 3. The Bill’s definition of “hate speech” is also broader than the Equality Act’s civil law definition of (civil) hate speech. This will make it easier to be found guilty of a criminal offence and sent to jail for up to five years than to be ordered to e.g. apologise under the Equality Act. 4. Vague and ambiguous: The Bill’s different elements for the crime of hate speech are either undefined (e.g. hate) or vague and/or ambiguous (e.g. social cohesion). The Bill also contradicts the Constitution’s founding value of the rule of the law (section 1(c)), because it fails to define the essential element of “hate”. This Just In ⚠️ On 5 Dec 2023, a group of children (20) travelled on a bus from Pretoria to Cape Town. Another passenger on the bus noticed that the children were not excited or noisy like children would act when going on holiday, They were very quiet, and the other passengers noticed that during bus breaks, the children were not getting off the bus. So this passenger alerted a family member in Kby to call the police and search the bus during their break in Kimberley. Police acted immediately and arrived in private clothes, bus was searched. The children were kidnapped and the children didn't even know each other.
