Repost fromย The Rice Furnace
All the experience gained from the border wars is fading away with each passing of legends like oom Jan. I find it sad that their experience cannot be transferred to the younger generation.

Rhodesian born private military contractor Lionel Dyck (80) died in Cape Town earlier this month (June) after succumbing to cancer. His military career saw him in the uniform of landward force of the then Rhodesian Security Forces (RSF) taking on Zimbabwean revolutionaries ahead of independence in April 1980. He was, a report has it, โ€œdeeply embroiled in the bloody independence warโ€, the subsequent integration of forces to create the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) and later as a contractor in Mozambique. Dyck founded the Dyck Advisory Group (DAG) which worked in demining, explosive hazard management, specialised security, canine services and counter-poaching (anti-poaching) across southern Africa.

๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿฆ First radioactive rhino horns to curb poaching in South Africa South African scientists injected radioactive material into live rhino horns to make them easier to detect at border posts in a pioneering project aimed at curbing poaching. James Larkin, director of the University of the Witwatersrand's radiation and health physics unit who ran the initiative, told AFP he had put "two tiny little radioactive chips in the horn" as he administered the radioisotopes on one of the large animals' horns. The radioactive material would "render the horn useless.. essentially poisonous for human consumption" added Nithaya Chetty, prof. and dean of science at the same university. "The radioactive material's dose was so low it would not impact the animal's health or the environment in any way" South Africa is a home to a large majority of the world's rhinos and as such is a hotspot for poaching driven by demand from Asia, where horns are used in traditional medicine for their supposed therapeutic effect.

South African military needs funding from private sector - CEO of the SA Defence Industry Association Estimated R60bn needed to return SANDF to basic competency says Sandile Ndlovu, CEO of the South African Aerospace, Maritime and Defence Industries Association
"We understand that that money is just not there for the state to give, that is why we are calling on the state to allow private funding to come and assist in resolving this problem" JEREMY MAGGS: How do you envisage then the proposed private funding model working in practice?" "Ja, I think the first point of departure on that, it would be to accept that the model that we are calling for, calls for closer cooperation and partnership between the SANDF and private industry, and of course the funders, because without a close relationship and close cooperation, the model would fall flat in the case of a security project."

Construction Mafias are the most influential in Durban but they're already spreading roots across the country. "Mafia" members have different tactics and they use different methods. Some literally steal expensive building materials at gun point, some demand a percentage of the profit of a project, some demand that "their guys" are appointed on the project (and then more stealing ensues underneath the table). In recent years, construction crime has reached alarming levels, prompting extensive research within South Africaโ€™s construction academic circles. Notably, the emergence of โ€œconstruction securityโ€ as a nascent branch within the private security industry reflects the urgent need to address this pressing issue. As South Africa continues to turn into the free market African Wild West, private security continues to develop. As things stand now South Africa has the most unique private security industry world wide and SA has no sign of abandoning private security systems any time soon.
