This is Evans syndrome, a term used todescribe an autoimmune disease in which bothred blood cells and platelets are attacked,orwhen immune-mediated hemolytic anemiaand immune-mediated thrombocytopeniaoccur simultaneously.
Note the cytological features of spherocytosiswith polychromasia and anisocytosis. Thereare also Howell-Jolly bodies present andvariable basophilic stippling. Also note a lackof platelets in the background.
Treatment involves immunosuppression,withblood transfusions and supportive care asneeded, and prognosis is guarded. Cockerspaniels are predisposed to immune-mediatedhemolytic anemia and thrombocytopenia. | 1 046 |
