In 1870s Amerindians were still a fairly significant proportion of the Mexican demographic. García Cubas describes their culture as diametrically opposed to mestizo and criollo: imbued with ancient habits, dialects and dress, tending towards idolatry and «blind fanaticism». It is remarkable to note how the Amerindian race, however, is in steady demographic decline, while the mestizos and whites increase their numbers. Garcia Cubas goes so far as to affirm their possible extinction. In contrast to the negative description of the Indian as the source of Mexico's economic backwardness, the image of the mestizo emerges as the economic future of the nation in the face of the decrepitude of the old races, according to Garcia Cubas' perspective.
