Score one for the humans. A London theater has canceled the premiere of a film that makes heavy use of artificial intelligence after receiving hundreds of complaints about it. The director of "The Last Screenwriter," Peter Luisi, defended his production as an exploration of using AI in film, and said he didn't believe its message is "'this is how movies should be.'" "All they hear is 'first film written entirely by AI' and they immediately see the enemy, and their anger goes towards us," Luisi said. "But I don't feel like that way at all." He also claimed it is a valuable experiment in seeing the "man versus machine" trope from the perspective of the latter. Many audiences don't seem to agree. Read more about the film at the link in our bio. | Futurism by ASM Channels

They're back. A new monolith has been found in the desert outside Las Vegas, the latest mysterious mirrored structure to appear in odd places around the world. This one was found by public officials, who asked one of the many questions on everyone's minds: "HOW did it get up there??" The discovery was made roughly three years after one was planted in downtown Las Vegas, a few months after the most recent monolith was found in Wales. What happens in Vegas, it appears, may not stay in Vegas. Read more about these mysterious mirrors at the link in our bio. | Futurism by ASM Channels

New day, new power of semaglutide. Medical practitioners are finding that some patients to whom they prescribe Wegovy, Ozempic and the like are suddenly cured of other chronic ailments. It follows previous signs that the drugs can be effective against diabetes, kidney disease, sleep apnea and Parkinson's — in addition to their now-widespread use to combat obesity. The science, however, is not yet entirely clear whether there is a causal link between taking weight loss drugs and the subsequent improvement of related conditions. And the debate continues in medical circles about how to treat obesity, leaving plenty of outstanding questions about how these powerful drugs will shape society. To read more about semaglutide, click the link in our bio. | Futurism by ASM Channels

We could be staring down the barrel of lots of unneeded oil. The continued growth of renewable energy sources and the high volume of oil production means there could be a "glut" of several million barrels per day by 2030, a new report found. "Such a massive oil production buffer could usher in a lower oil price environment," the report, from the International Energy Agency, said. Pain would likely be felt both in the U.S. and in OPEC member countries like Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. That could create a slick environment for producers in which to operate at the end of the decade. For more on why oil demand is expected to slow, go to the link in our bio. | Futurism by ASM Channels

Automakers have figured out how to push drivers' buttons: too many touchscreens. So it's time to turn the wheel of time back a bit. Many buyers are complaining that a bevy of new tech in cars is distracting, complicated to navigate and flat out annoying. Some worry that ultramodern vehicles have become surveillance machines. That's causing a decent chunk of car-seekers to turn to used models, and studies show the average age of vehicles on American roads is getting older. And there's good news on the horizon: Many automakers are bringing buttons back. Read more about the changes in the car market at the link in our bio. | Futurism by ASM Channels

Hold on, what is that? NASA's Perseverance Mars rover was surveying the Red Planet when it came upon a hill covered in boulders — some of which were "of a type never observed before on Mars." One nearly pale rock was so distinct that scientists gave it a name, Atoko Point. NASA believes the boulder was made of pyroxene and feldspar, minerals which suggest it may have originated from an underground source of magma. It could be the first time a kind of rock commonplace on Earth has ever been found on Mars. Read more about the boulder — and what its discovery could mean — at the link in our bio. | Futurism by ASM Channels

At the bottom of the ocean, researchers struck gold — in the form of a shipwreck. An expedition team searching the choppy, frigid waters off Canada's Atlantic Coast discovered the wreckage of a ship chartered by famous explorer Ernest Shackleton. They found the ship, which was to head to Antarctica, after scanning the ocean floor for 17 hours with sonar equipment. "Very quickly you could see it was Quest," the expedition's leader said. "The vessel is intact. It's sitting on its keel." The discovery of the Quest comes two years after a separate group found the wreckage of another Shackleton ship, the Endurance, in the Antarctic. Read more about these shipwrecks at the link in our bio. | Futurism by ASM Channels

It's time to take the search for dark matter to a new place: the ionosphere. A group of researchers posit that radio waves detected there — a part of the upper atmosphere — could be the result of particles interacting with dark matter. In other words, those dark matter waves could be battering Earth. It's still a speculative theory, and it could take decades of research to prove. But the ionosphere is close to us, and "if it works," an astrophysicist said, "it would be a gold mine." Go to the link in our bio to read more about this theory. | Futurism by ASM Channels

NASA's employees are so good they're basically mythical. That's according to the space agency's administrator, Bill Nelson, who is developing a habit of calling them "wizards." Apropos to almost nothing, the former Florida senator told a television interviewer that he worked alongside a "bunch of wizards." And last month, he tweeted nearly that exact same phrase while marking his three-year anniversary heading the agency. To be fair, is he wrong? Read more of Nelson's comments at the link in our bio. | Futurism by ASM Channels

A Boeing jet was taking off normally when flames suddenly shot from its engine, creating a “heart in mouth” moment for passengers and bystanders alike. The Air Canada 777 was heading from Toronto to Paris when an issue with the compressor stall caused fuel to ignite, the airline said. The engine itself was not on fire. It’s the latest in a seemingly endless series of bad headlines for the aerospace giant this year. Or as one netizen said: “Another fkn Boeing.” Read the full story of this scary scene at the link in our bio. | Futurism by ASM Channels
