🤖 Android 15 is finally out for Pixel devices.
A month and a half after its release in AOSP, Google has finally released the Android 15 update for supported Pixel devices (6 and newer). This version of the OS includes the following new features:
• Private space
• App archiving
• Predictive back gesture animation for supported apps (now enabled by default)
• Saving app pairs
• Ability to pin the taskbar on tablets
• Updated Volume panel
• Dynamic color contrast settings
• Automatically turn Bluetooth on the next day
• New smart home control screensaver
• Updated wallpaper setup menu
• Improvements to the preview of widgets in the list

⌚️ The 1st and 2nd gen Pixel Watches are getting the Wear OS 5 update along with a September security patch.
Wear OS 5 is based on Android 14 and brings numerous bug fixes, performance improvements and new features such as:
• A new Privacy dashboard under Settings > Apps & Notifications, which offers users a centralized view of how each app accesses data like location and microphone.
• New Watch Face Format, which adds preset configurations called Flavors, weather conditions, a heart rate system data source, and two new types of complications: Goal progress and Weighted Elements (Useful for displaying discrete subsets of data).
• Option to enable grid app menu.
• Ability to select a media output device directly from the watch.
• Apps will be able to detect when a user takes a screenshot (part of Android 14).
You also get more detailed running metrics with the Health Services update:
• Ground contact time: The amount of time, during a single step, that a runner's foot is in contact with the ground.
• Stride length: The distance covered by a single step.
• Vertical oscillation: The distance that a user's center of mass moves up and down with each step.
• Vertical ratio: Vertical oscillation divided by stride length.
• Debounced goals: improves the user experience for people who want to maintain a specific threshold or range—such as heart rate—throughout their workout.
You'll also get improved camera controls (Google Camera app update) and the ability to install the new Pixel Recorder app for Wear OS, which is only available for v.5.0.
To speed up getting the update, put the watch on charge, open the Settings/System/System Update page, and tap the watch icon at the top several times in a row.

External display settings - a feature I spotted last month - is now live in Android 15 QPR1 Beta 2!
When you hook your Pixel 8 or Pixel 9 series device up to an external monitor, you'll be able to change its display resolution or rotation under Settings > Connected devices.

Android 16 may get a revamped quick settings and notifications panel.
The current design of the panel, which combines notifications and quick settings, hasn't changed much since it was introduced in Android 12. However, Mishaal Rahman (via Android Authority) revealed that Google is working on a redesign of the panel that will separate notifications from quick settings.
The notifications panel will still be accessible with a normal swipe from the statusbar, but now it will no longer take up the entire screen and you will be able to see the app you were in as it was before Android 12. A repeated swipe no longer opens quick settings.
And to open the quick settings panel, you have to swipe with two fingers, which most users probably won't like.
The design is still raw, to say the least, and may undergo significant changes in the final version, but it's clear that Google is considering a major overhaul of the notification panel and quick settings, which will likely be added in Android 16.

⬇️ September 2024 Android 14 security patch has been released for Pixel devices.
This update is still based on Android 14 QPR3. Android 15 is expected next month. Also, the list of devices receiving the new patch did not include the Pixel 5a (5G), the official support for the device ended in August this year.

🤖 Android 15 has been released at AOSP. Release on Pixel devices in a month.
Google has published the Android 15 source code to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). This means that independent developers can now create their own ROMs based on Android 15 AOSP.
As Google states, Android 15 will be released for supported Pixel devices in the “coming weeks,” but rumors suggest it will happen in October, possibly even mid-October.

Android 15's new Volume panel will keep the Active Noise Cancellation toggle.
During the Android 15 beta test, Google introduced an updated Volume panel. However, up until the current moment, its main issue remained the absence of the Active Noise Cancellation switch for Pixel Buds Pro, which was present in the previous design.
In bug reports on Issue Tracker, Google responded with “Intended behavior. We'll have an update in the final release.” And even reporting this being on 15 QPR1 beta 1, which also lacks this switch, the response remained unchanged.
As I discovered, Google is planning to bring back the Noise Control switch using the Google Play Services server-side flag. So in fact, the company didn't cheat, and users no longer need to report it on Issue Tracker.

Android 15 QPR1 Beta1: Updated animation for holding down quick settings tiles
Holding a tile that can open a full settings page will now play a new zoom animation that progresses as you hold it. This action is also accompanied by an updated haptic feedback with a click at the beginning, a rising vibration and a click at the end.

Android 15 QPR1 Beta1: The keyboard has received a predictive back gesture animation.
Android 15 enables predictive gesture back by default for apps that support this. It typically shows you which screen you'll get to, or which item you'll close (navdrawer, bottom sheet card, etc.).
Android 15 QPR1 goes further and includes a predictive back gesture animation for the keyboard. But it doesn't work everywhere. For this to work, the application must have implemented smooth keyboard opening animations: the WindowInsetsAnimationCompat — an API existing since Android 11.
If the app supports this API, predictive keyboard animation will work even if the app does not support predictive back gesture.
