We've just finished our first lesson with the advanced students of my Speaking Boost group. I don't want to toot my own horn, but I think the comments already give a pretty revealing picture of the course quality. We did advanced listening activities, followed by academic discussion of an education topic -- Carbon Offsets. I'm not accepting any more students, but you can join the wait list for the new cohort, which will start next month. @ulugbeksadmin πŸ‘ˆ

BAND 9 ESSAY Many people are now spending more and more time travelling to work or school. Some people believe that this is a negative development while others think there are some benefits. Discuss both views and give your opinion. It is common knowledge that there has been a considerable rise in the amount of time students and workers spend commuting. While the proponents of this trend make the case that this is of some benefit for the commuters, the opponents claim that it is not useful for society as we know it. Some people associate increased commute time with certain benefits. One of them is a chance to carry out tasks that are otherwise left undone. Time spent on a bus or train can be used to read books, for example, which is an activity most find difficult to squeeze into their daily routines. If commuters find it difficult to read on board, they could then turn to alternative media such as video or audio. While on the subway, most students and workers in my country can be spotted with their headphones plugged into their ears, listening to their favorite podcasts or enjoying songs and movies. In these ways, people traveling to work or school can make the most of their commute. On the other hand, I believe that the potential benefits that come with increased travel time pale in comparison with the dangers associated with it. Clearly, the very fact that people are having to commute longer than ever before speaks to the problems plaguing a society. Take traffic jams for example. They are a known driving factor in the disappointingly long hours of car rides. Not only does traffic congestion mean increased fares for an already struggling working class, but it also wears down passengers, negatively affecting their jobs and studies. This, coupled with other reasons for increased commute time such as high property prices, inflames the societal problems running rampant in many countries. In conclusion, traveling from point to another has never been more time-consuming. Although there are possible useful ways of making use of this increased commute time, I would argue that the repercussions of this development are far too great to ignore. 328 words
