New Delhi: The National Testing Agency (NTA) is set to notify a rationalised syllabus for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test-Undergraduate (NEET-UG) 2024 next week. The online registration process for the entrance test for admission to undergraduate medical, dental and allied courses, to be held on May 5 next year, will start in January.
NEET-UG is one of the largest entrance tests in the world with registration touching 20.87 lakh in 2023, up by over 2 lakh as compared with 2022.
According to NTA, the new syllabus is based on inputs from the National Medical Commission (NMC) and after consultations with various Boards which rationalised their senior secondary syllabus during Covid.
âNTA will notify NEET-UG syllabus next week so that it helps students in preparation. It will be a reduced syllabus. The students will be getting over six months to plan their studies for the entrance test,â said NTA Director General Subodh Kumar Singh.
Various education Boards, including Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) as well as National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) reduced the syllabus for classes IX to XII due to academic disruption during the pandemic. The current class XII batch was in class IX in 2020 when rationalisation of syllabus was initiated. However, the syllabus for NEET-UG and JEE (Main) had remained untouched so far.
As of now, a little over 1.04 lakh MBBS seats are available, including more than 54000 in government medical colleges while BDS has over 27,800 seats. Apart from this, there are more than 52,700 AYUSH programme seats and 603 for veterinary sciences and animal husbandry. Admissions for homoeopathic and Unani medicine courses are also based on NEET-UG scores.
Seats are filled under two categories in government medical colleges â All India Quota (AIQ) and state quota. A maximum of 15% of seats are reserved in every MBBS government college for AIQ. | 623 |
