Rabindranath Tagore was also an influential artist and musician. He wrote around 2230 songs and painted 3000 paintings. He even composed the National Anthem of India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Visva Bharati University, which was known as Shantiniketan founded by Rabindranath Tagore.

In 1959, the Indian government created a panel to reorganise states along linguistic lines. The panel advocated the formation of a distinct Marathi-speaking state that would include Bombay City and other Marathi-speaking territories within the state of Bombay. Finally, on May 1, 1960, the state of Maharashtra was established.
The panel advocated the creation of a separate state for Gujarati-speaking people, consisting of the Gujarat and Saurashtra sections of the erstwhile Bombay State. Gujarat officially became a state on May 1, 1960, with Ahmedabad being its capital.
