Means something marked by extravagance or sometimes tasteless showiness
e.g. wearing an overwhelmingly gaudy sweater will instantly take away from your look's overall elegance.

Long past midnight بعد منتصف الليل بوقت طويل
e.g. “It was long past midnight when Marmee returned.”
It means, it was a lot later than midnight when Marmee returned. You could also use 'way past' in place of 'long past'.
