In December 2025, eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant warned that connected vehicles were becoming “weapons on wheels” in domestic violence cases.
Her point was: cars are no longer passive machines. They track, listen, record, and can be remotely controlled — and those features were already being misused inside Australian homes.
Now, a former national cyber security chief has issued a very different warning about the very same technology.

A FRIENDLY REMINDER
It is completely normal to be sceptical of new government powers, especially when it comes to your personal data and freedom of speech. There are legitimate debates to be had about scope creep and privacy.
However, the claim that the government is about to take control of your feed, or that you will be arrested for a joke, is not supported by the official documents. The proposal is to give you a choice to turn off algorithms and to make tech companies more responsible for the safety risks their platforms create.
Take a moment to read the official papers if you are concerned. The government is inviting public feedback, and your voice matters in shaping the final law.

Arrests for communications offences in the UK did rise sharply, with more than 12,000 individuals detained in the year leading up to 2025 for posts on social media.
However, these arrests are based on pre-existing laws like the Communications Act 2003 and the Malicious Communications Act 1988, not on the newer Online Safety Act. The gap between arrests and convictions is also huge. While arrests climbed to an average of 30 to 33 per day in 2025, convictions have declined, with only around 1,500 convictions in 2025 against those 12,000 arrests.
Most arrest referrals never proceed to a charge. UK authorities are reviewing these laws to clarify definitions and prevent their use for minor offences. Australia's proposal, meanwhile, is focused on platform responsibility rather than criminalising individuals for comments.
WHAT THE GOVERNMENT SAYS ABOUT IDENTITY CHECKS
Another major fear is that you will be forced to present government ID to use social media. Minister Wells has publicly rejected this claim.
She has stated that you will not be forced to present government ID to verify your age, and that the law requires platforms to always offer a reasonable alternative to users.
The government acknowledges that privacy advocates are concerned anonymity could be eroded, but the current framework does not mandate government-issued ID for all users. The focus remains on making platforms accountable for the risks their systems create.
IS THIS ABOUT MISOGYNY OR CENSORSHIP?
The government frames this legislation around preventing serious online harms, including misogyny, racism and attacks on young people. The Rickard review specifically recommended duties targeting these psychosocial harms.
Critics, including some faith groups and free speech advocates, argue this is a backdoor to censorship. They worry it could silence political dissent or faith voices.
Legal experts such as Professor Christine Parker of the University of Melbourne suggest the duty regulates how companies manage risks rather than creating new categories of illegal speech. The government has stated that rules made under the Digital Duty of Care would be subject to parliamentary scrutiny and would need to address compatibility with human rights, including freedom of expression.
HOW TO READ THE OFFICIAL GOVERNMENT TEXT
If you want to form your own view, the best move is to read the actual documents rather than relying on viral posts. The government has released an issues paper and is preparing an exposure draft of the legislation.
You can find the official consultation paper, the issues paper and related documents on the government's Digital Duty of Care page:

The Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, Sport and the Arts is the official source for all details regarding the Digital Duty of Care framework.
To read the full independent review that recommended these changes, you can access the final report here:

❗🇦🇺 WHAT IS CHANGING ONLINE THIS WEEK?
(AND WHY SHOULD YOU CARE)
THE GOVERNMENT IS CHANGING HOW YOU SEE SOCIAL MEDIA:
HERE IS WHAT TO KNOW
THE DIGITAL DUTY OF CARE NEWS
find this article here :
@Digital_ID_Au
You have likely seen the viral messages circulating on social media claiming that the Australian government is introducing a new law to control your feed and silence free speech. It is completely understandable to feel alarmed by headlines claiming the government is seizing control of your digital life.
However, the reality is quite different from the alarmist narrative. While the government is indeed introducing new safety obligations, the specific claims about forced feed control and mass arrests for comments are not accurate.
Here is the friendly, fact-based breakdown of what is actually happening, why it is being proposed, and where you can read the official government text yourself.
THE DIGITAL DUTY OF CARE IS REAL BUT IT IS DIFFERENT
The Australian Government is moving forward with a proposal called the Digital Duty of Care. This is not a hidden law being rushed through parliament tonight. It is a formal policy framework that has been publicly discussed and is currently in the consultation phase.
The government has committed to legislating a Digital Duty of Care on online services to help prevent serious online harms to Australians.
The core idea is to shift the responsibility for safety from individual users to the technology companies. Instead of platforms reacting to harm after it happens, they would be required to design safety features into their products before they launch.
This proposal draws on a major independent review of Australia's online safety laws led by Delia Rickard. That review recommended that large social media companies be required to proactively address harms such as child sexual exploitation and attacks based on gender, race or religion.
WHAT THE LAW ACTUALLY SAYS ABOUT FEEDS
One of the biggest claims in the viral messages is that the government wants to control your social media feeds. This is actually the opposite of what is being proposed.
Under the current proposal, technology companies will be required to give users the option to switch off algorithms so their feeds feature only accounts they follow.
This is often described as an algorithmic off-switch. The idea is to give you more control over what you see, not less. You would be able to choose a timeline that shows content only from people you know and trust, without the algorithmic amplification of controversial or harmful content.
Communications Minister Anika Wells has explained that the legislation is designed to prevent tech giants from holding back on safety features. She has stated that the framework is more about psychosocial harms and the design of platform features rather than the government moderating your personal speech.
WHY THE UK ARREST STATISTICS ARE MISLEADING
The viral message also claims that the UK has over 30 arrests every day for comments and posts. While there has been a surge in arrests for online speech in the UK, the context is often misrepresented.

| 5 | 🇺🇸 Bessent says America’s biggest AI companies have done a “HORRENDOUS JOB” explaining themselves to the American people.
“The AI companies, whether it is the builders of the data centers, whether it is the labs themselves have done a horrendous job, horrendous job of explaining themselves to the American people.”
The Treasury Secretary gave the industry a D-, but says slowing down isn't an option.
“The Chinese are right behind us. If they get ahead, everything else we do won’t matter.”
Bessent says the US controlled roughly 55-60% of global AI compute last year and predicts that could reach 80% by 2028.
He also expects the AI spending boom to become “extremely disinflationary,” with productivity benefits starting to show within the next six months.

Darknavy Team Cracks Latest Starlink Terminals:
- A New Era for Satellite Security Research
A Singapore- and Shanghai-based cybersecurity research institute known as Darknavy has announced a major breakthrough, claiming to have successfully compromised the latest Starlink user terminals.
In a post released on Tuesday, the team detailed how they utilized sophisticated hardware attacks to bypass the terminal's security measures, gaining full administrative control over the device. This achievement allows researchers to execute custom code on the terminals, a capability that has been largely elusive following SpaceX's recent security upgrades.
https://www.scmp.com/news/china/science/article/3366192/china-singapore-security-team-claims-breakthrough-hacking-starlink-terminals
Unlike previous attempts that relied on software flaws, Darknavy purchased a Starlink Standard Actuated terminal in Singapore in March and performed a deep-dive hardware analysis. By disassembling the antenna and analyzing the firmware, the team was able to inject custom code directly into the terminal's operations.
https://ua.news/en/it-ta-telekom/institut-darknavy-zaiaviv-pro-zlam-novikh-terminaliv-starlink
This breakthrough is critical for several reasons:
Restoring Research Access: It reopens a vital entry point for studying the Starlink network's security, which had become significantly harder to analyze after SpaceX implemented stricter protections.
Firmware and Protocol Analysis: Researchers can now dissect the terminal's firmware, stress-test communication protocols, and search for hidden vulnerabilities that could impact the broader satellite network.
Real-World Impact: Since Starlink terminals serve as critical network nodes, especially in remote or battlefield environments where ground infrastructure is absent, understanding their security posture is essential for national security and global connectivity resilience.
As of now, SpaceX has not issued an official comment regarding Darknavy's claims. The research team has stated that they will release further technical details in the future, inviting the wider security community to scrutinize their findings.
https://singapore.news-pravda.com/singapore/2026/09/04/2439.html
This development mirrors earlier efforts by security researcher Lennert Wouters, who previously gained root access to Starlink dishes using a $25 hardware modchip, though that method relied on a different approach to bypassing the secure boot process.
