Task 1: The charts below show the percentage of workers in three sectors across four countries in 1980 and 2010. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The bar graph gives information about the proportion of people working in three different sectors in the USA, Germany, Japan and China over three decades, starting from 1980. In general, in three countries, namely Germany, the USA, Japan, while most of people worked for industry, the lowest figures were recorded for those working in agriculture in both years. In contrast, the opposite was true for China. Focusing on Germany, the USA and Japan, they had almost similar trends over the period. In all these countries, the percentages of people working in industrial sectors were the highest and saw an increase, with figures rising from 60%, around 55% and 50% in 1980 to over 80%, 70% and 80%, respectively. Similarly, the figures for service employees climbed marginally by 10% each, constituting around 42% in Germany, 38% in the USA and 30% in Japan. Lastly, as for those working in agriculture sectors, the percentages were insignificant and decreased slightly to around 5%. In the contrary, the figures for China exhibited different trends. The percentage of people working in agriculture and service sectors decreased, with the former declining from 70% to 50% and the latter from 50% to 20% in 1970 and 2010, respectively. Unlike other trends, the figure for industry workers remained unchanged at 40% over the period. 216 words

Task 2: Most countries aim to improve their standard of living through economic development, but many important social values can be lost as a result. Do the advantages of economic development outweigh the disadvantages? In recent years, many developing countries have put a greater focus on economic development, believing that it tends to enhance standards of living. Although some people argue that such intensive attention to the economy can have negative impacts on social values, I side with the idea that the benefits that can be achieved through higher life standards far outweigh the drawbacks. On the one hand, there are two primary reasons why intensive focus on the economy leads to negative development, one of which is the loss of relationships among workers. Due to their greater workload and concentration, people may spend their long hours without taking breaks and socializing, potentially leading to fragile bonds with their counterparts. The current situation in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan, can be a great case in point, as office workers are adopting a more and more isolated lifestyle because of fewer face-to-face contacts. Moreover, such attention to economic improvements can not only have adverse effects on employees but also deteriorate work-life balance. For example, many families are dual-income these days, which means that they may not have enough time for family trips and child upbringing, undoubtedly weakening bonds. I, on the other hand, believe that having good standards of living through economic development can be much more beneficial since it fosters both society and people. While less face-to-face contact is thought to be the disadvantage of a strong focus on the economy, the problem can be alleviated through organizing co-working zones and team-building activities. When it comes to weakening bonds among families, it can be solved when the whole society supports other fields of work and develops financially. For example, launching online banking systems tends to benefit numerous workplaces and individuals, enabling them to make payments online and saving a great deal of time. In addition, a drive for a better standard of living can have several positive sides. First of all, countries with strong economic stability tend to pave the way for children to have a high-quality education, further enhancing society and family well-being. Secondly, a majority of jobs, regardless of their intensive focus on financial development, let their workers have monthly day-offs to prevent them from being overburdened. Because of this, these people can spend their valuable time with their families, strengthening relationships at the same time. In conclusion, while an aim to have better life standards through economic advancements can be the cause of isolated working ethics and weakened work-life balance, they can be alleviated to some extent with special gatherings at work and developments in the entire society. Lastly, I argue that better education and continuous day-offs are more likely to outweigh the disadvantages. 443 words.
