Diabetes Mellitus: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by high blood glucose levels (hyperglycemia) resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. It is a major health problem worldwide, and its prevalence is increasing at an alarming rate. There are two main types of diabetes: Type 1 and Type 2. Type 1 Diabetes: Also known as insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) or juvenile-onset diabetes. It is an autoimmune disorder in which the immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. This results in a complete deficiency of insulin, leading to hyperglycemia. Treatment involves insulin replacement therapy, either through injections or an insulin pump. Type 2 Diabetes: Also known as non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) or adult-onset diabetes. It is caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors, including obesity and a sedentary lifestyle. The pancreas still produces insulin, but the body becomes resistant to its effects, leading to hyperglycemia. Treatment involves lifestyle changes, such as weight loss and exercise, and medications that improve insulin sensitivity or increase insulin secretion. Symptoms of diabetes mellitus can include: Increased thirst and urination Fatigue Blurred vision Slow healing wounds Tingling or numbness in the hands or feet Complications of diabetes mellitus can include: Cardiovascular disease Kidney disease Nerve damage Eye damage Foot damage, including ulcers and amputations Prevention and management of diabetes mellitus involve: Maintaining a healthy weight Engaging in regular physical activity Eating a healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein Monitoring blood glucose levels regularly Taking medications as prescribed by a healthcare provider Managing other health conditions, such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol
