"Of course we're okay. We have to be. Tomorrow is coming with its plans and due dates and responsibilities. We don't have room for today or yesterday or any of our memories. We box them and hope the floor doesn't fall ouf of the attic and onto our heads. We live flinching, looking up, hoping today we hold it together. We have to just make it through tomorrow. Doesn't have to be pretty. We just have to be okay enough so we can keep surviving."

"Now I have really known suffering. And I have survived. I am alone—unloved, with or without someone to love—the thing I feared the most in the world. I have touched the bottom, and I have survived."
— Susan Sontag, As Consciousness is harnessed Into The Flesh (edited by David Rieff)
"I will never outlast this pain (healing passage of time, etc.). It will only recede and diminish if I can somehow transpose the emotions—as from grief to anger, from despair to assent. I must become active. As long as I continue to experience myself as done to (not doing), this unbearable pain will not desert me—"

Warsan Shire once wrote: "my body is burning with the shame of not belonging"; well, mine is palpitating under the guilt of unlived lives.
"No offense to God, but everything my mother prayed I wouldn't be, I became. Every place she prayed I wouldn't go, I went. I walked so long I found Mercy, I draped her thighs over my shoulders and drank; she's abundant and I'm finally alive. Had I been what I was supposed to be, I'd be my mother's safehouse. I'd be her motherland. I wouldn't wander, I would remain. Everything I've done has been in Love's name, and in Love's name I've done these sins: I've clenched my fist. I've run. I've bitten my tongue dead raw. I've covered my chest and hummed and swallowed blood."
— Hiwot Adilow, "Mihret" (published in Nepantla)
"You're a heap of flesh and guts and blood in a wax museum. The only thing real. Sickeningly real. Crimson and warm where the others are pale and cold. Revoltingly red, neauseatingly alive."
— Layana Clouet, "A Love Letter to a Dead Thing"
