Coulomb theory is one of the fundamental principles in physics related to electrical forces. It was named after the French scientist Charles Augustin de Coulomb. Here is a simplified explanation of this theory: ### Basic concept: The Coulomb theory states that: 1. The electric force between two charges is directly proportional to the product of the magnitude of the two charges, and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them. 2. This relationship can be expressed by the following equation: \[ F = k \frac{|q_1 \cdot q_2|}{r^2}\] where: - \( F \) is the electric force between the two charges. - \(q_1\) and \(q_2\) are the amounts of the two charges. - \(r\) is the distance between the center of the two charges. - \(k\) is Coulomb's constant, which is approximately equal to \(8.99 \times 10^9\, \text{N m}^2/\text{C}^2\). ### Characteristics of electrical forces: - Attractive or repulsive force: If the two charges are of the same type (positive or negative), the force is repulsive. If it is of two different types (positive and negative), the force is gravitational. - Distance effect: As the distance between two charges increases, the electric force decreases dramatically, as it is proportional to the square of the distance. ### Applications of Coulomb Theory: - Coulomb theory is used to explain electrical phenomena such as static charges, the operation of electrical devices, and the interactions of charged particles. This theory forms the basis for understanding electricity and magnetism in physics.
