Stephen Joseph Scalise was born on October 6, 1965. He has served as the House Majority Leader since 2023, and he has served as the U.S. Representative for Louisiana's 1st congressional district since 2008. Scalise was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge with a major in computer science and a minor in political science. On June 14, 2017, Scalise and three other people were shot and wounded by James Hodgkinson, a left-wing extremist, during the Republican team’s baseball practice for the annual Congressional Baseball Game. On January 6, 2021, Scalise voted to de-certify President-elect Biden's victories in both Arizona and Pennsylvania. In February 2021, more than a month after Joe Biden's inauguration, Scalise refused to acknowledge that the election was not stolen or fraudulent. On October 11, 2023, Scalise was nominated as the choice of the Republican caucus for the next Speaker of the House, winning his place as the Republican nominee with 113 of the 212 republican votes cast for the speakership. Steve Scalise is a Roman Catholic. He is married to Jennifer Ann Letulle, and they have two children.
