Today we are going to talk about Aten, a deity who has been a source of debate since he first appeared, so let’s see. --- 🔴 Name and meaning 𓇋 𓏏 𓈖 𓇳 ἰtn Ⲓⲱⲧⲉⲛ Hieroglyphic: Aten or Yaten Coptic: Yoten The meaning of the name is “the disk” or “the sun disk,” depending on the context, but originally it means “disk.” He also had 4 very distinctive and unusual titles: 𓋹 𓅊 𓈌 𓈌 𓎛 𓂝 𓏮 𓏛 𓐝 𓈌 ꜥnḫ rꜥ ḥr ꜣḫty ḥꜥἰ m ꜣḫt Ⲁⲛϧ Ⲣⲏ Ϩⲱⲣ ϧ̀ⲑⲉ ϩⲱ ⲙ̀ ϧ̀ⲑⲉ Hieroglyphic: Ankh Ra Hor Akhty Hai Em Akht Coptic: Ankh Ra Hor Ikhta Hu Em Ikhta Translation: “Ra lives, Horakhty (Ra who rules the horizons), who rejoices in the horizon.” 𓐝 𓂋 𓈖 𓆑 𓐝 𓆄 𓅱 𓇳 𓈖 𓏏 𓏭 𓐝 𓇋 𓏏 𓈖 𓇳 m rn.f m šw nty m ἰtn Ⲙ̀ⲡⲉϥⲣⲁⲛ ⲙ̀ Ϣⲟ ⲉⲧⲉ ⲙ̀ Ⲓⲱⲧⲉⲛ Hieroglyphic: Em Renf Em Shu Nti Em Yoten Coptic: Empaf Ran Em Shu Ata Em Yoten Translation: “In his name is Shu, who is in Aten.” 𓋹 𓇳 𓋾 𓈌 𓈌 𓎛 𓂝 𓏮 𓐝 𓈌 ꜥnḫ rꜥ ḥḳꜣ ꜣḫty ḥꜥἰ m ꜣḥt Ⲁⲛϧ Ⲣⲏ ϩⲱⲕⲓ ϧ̀ⲑⲉ ϩⲱ ⲙ̀ ϧ̀ⲑⲉ Hieroglyphic: Ankh Ra Heka Akhty Hai Em Akht Coptic: Ankh Ra Hoki Ikhta Hu Em Ikhta Translation: “Ra lives, the ruler of the two horizons, who rejoices in the horizon.” 𓐝 𓂋 𓈖 𓆑 𓐝 𓇳 𓏏 𓇋 𓇍 𓐝 𓇋 𓏏 𓈖 𓇳 m rn.f m ἰt rꜥ ἰἰ m ἰtn Ⲙ̀ⲡⲉϥⲣⲁⲛ ⲙ̀ ⲓⲱⲧ Ⲣⲏ ⲓ̀ ⲙ̀ Ⲓⲱⲧⲉⲛ Hieroglyphic: Em Renf Em Yot Ra Ii Em Yoten Coptic: Empaf Ran Em Yot Ra I Em Yoten Translation: “In his name, the father Ra comes as Aten.” --- 🔵 Description 1. He is depicted with a human body and a sun head. 2. A sun with many rays extending from it. 3. As a falcon with the sun on his head. As a human form: His eyes are golden and shining. His hair is golden. His skin is very light and glowing. He has many arms. --- 🟢 Domain 1. He is the sun disk. 2. The light of the sun. 3. He is associated with the scorching midday sun. --- 🟡 Family In practice, he has no family because he is the sun itself. --- 🟣 History 1. Aten first appeared in the Pyramid Texts as just a word meaning “disk,” that is, a flat circle, which was called Aten. So the sun disk was called “Ra Aten,” meaning the disk of day, and the moon disk was called “Djehuty Aten,” meaning the disk of silver. 2. In the Middle Kingdom, Aten began to appear as one of the netjeru, or more precisely as a reference to Ra, as in the Story of Sinuhe: “May the departed king ascend and merge with the sun disk and return to his maker.” 3. In the reign of Amenhotep III, Aten began to appear as a relatively separate entity. 4. In the time of Akhenaten, Aten reached the height of his era and became the only god... or something close to that, since Akhenaten and Nefertiti also had to be worshipped with him, because there was no direct means of communication otherwise. --- ⚫️ Notes 1. Akhenaten’s religion was somewhat complex, because it was not fully monotheistic, as we see. 2. Aten’s titles were found in the remains of Tell el-Amarna, temples, and various other scattered آثار. 3. Poetic hymns praising Aten were written and are considered among the finest forms of literature in ancient Egypt, and there are songs online about them—I recommend listening to them. That is all ✨❤️

Today we’ll talk about a neter who is very underrated. Sadly, hardly anyone hears about him, even though he is considered very important. So let us get to know who he is. --- 🔴 Name and meaning 𓅃 𓅨 𓂋 Ϩⲱⲣ ⲟⲩⲏⲣ Heru : Hor-Wer Coptic: Hor Wēr The meaning of the name is “Hor the Great,” and Hor itself means “the elevated one” or “the one above all.” His name in Greek is Haroeris, and in English he is called Horus the Elder, though I am against both of those. --- 🔵 Description He is actually depicted in several ways, for example: 1. As a falcon with no distinctive markings. 2. With the body of a lion and the head of a falcon. 3. With the body of a man and the head of a falcon. 4. With the body of a man, the head of a falcon, and wearing the Crown of the South. In human form, his eyes are two different colors: one golden and one blue, with black hair. His skin tone is darker than Set’s (whose skin is fairer than white sand), but lighter than Osir’s (who is a darker wheat tone, like Upper Egyptians who are exposed to the sun a lot). So Hor-Wer is somewhere in between them. --- 🟢 Domains 1. Hor-Wer was considered the ruler of the sky, the one who determined the paths of the sun, moon, and stars, how each one would move, and where each would be. 2. He had an important role in protecting the deceased in the afterlife. 3. He merges with Ra in the form of Ra-Horakhty. --- 🟡 Family Hor-Wer is the son of Geb, son of Shu, son of Ra. He is the brother of Set, Osir, Neptu, and Isa. His wife is Hathor. His children are the Four Sons of Hor, whom we might speak about later. --- 🟣 The Greek period and parallel stories In the Greek period, he was treated as just another form of Hor son of Isa, nothing more. 1. In order to give him a story where he had a creator aspect distinct from Hor son of Isa, they altered the story a bit, so he became the son of Ra and Heket, and they completely removed Geb and Nut from the story, along with his siblings. They also gave him a wife under the name Tasenetnofret, and from her he had a son named Panebtawy. 2. In the second version, they said no, he was actually the son of Ra and Nut, and still a creator god. 3. In the third version, things became more complicated: he became the son of Geb and Nut, but while Osir and Isa were still in the womb, they got married and conceived him there, so he became the son of all four of them. Yes, really, the Greeks said that, and it is mentioned by Plutarch along with the rest of the stories. In the end, when they got confused about the matter, they almost erased him and said: no, in the end he is just Hor son of Isa in another form. Then they continued building other stories from their own imagination and erased his real identity. --- ⚫️ Notes 1️⃣ With the coming of the Greeks, he was subjected to many very strange changes, and his story changed completely, as you have seen. 2️⃣ Very often, many of his titles and deeds are wrongly attributed to Hor son of Isa. 3️⃣ Among his titles are: * The One Distinguished in Eyes: because one of his eyes resembles the sun and the other the moon. * The Great Lord, Bearer of the Knives of the Yat-fish: a title tied to one of his adventures. * Shu, Son of Ra: linked to a story about him and the lakes of Shu; the literal meaning of the title is “the shining one, son of Ra.” * Kem-Wer / The Great Black One: because of the blackness of his hair, like the darkness of night. That is all, so we do not make it too long ❤️

As for the Karnak Temple, because here he appears as Amun-Ra, it was arranged so that the sun shines upon it on 21 December, the beginning of the winter solstice. This is not random, but connected to Amun’s association with hiddenness, and the winter solstice being the period when Ra appears the least. Abu Simbel Temple: Some people say that an engineering accident caused the sun to shine into the Holy of Holies, but they forgot the rule we just mentioned above. So let us focus: upon whom does the sun shine? It shines upon Ra-Horakhty, Amun-Ra, and Ramesses himself. The first two are the Sun God himself, and Ramesses is of his making, so of course the sun must shine upon him. But the sun can never and would never shine upon Ptah. That is because Ptah is a neter of another realm, and our sun does not appear to him, so he cannot see it directly. And that is all. I hope you liked the post, and have a lovely day ❤️❤️

We will talk about something important and a bit complex, yet simple at the same time: the “Holy of Holies.” A lot of people hear this term, but they do not actually understand what it is, even though it is something very important in Egyptian belief. So let us explain it. Note: this post is dense and full of information, so grab a pen and paper and let’s begin. ————————————————————————————————————————— 🔴 Linguistically Its name in Egyptian is: 𓊨 𓏏 𓉐 𓅱 𓂋 𓏏 st wrt Ⲥⲉⲟⲩⲏⲣⲓ Sa wari which means “the Great Seat” or “the Great Place.” So where did the term “Holy of Holies” come from? It comes from the Jewish term (קֹדֶשׁ הַקֳּדָשִׁים / Qodesh HaQodashim), and by coincidence it matches the description, because it was the deepest part of the Jewish temple and had the same function. From there, the label began to be used for anything similar, and in English it became Holy of Holies. So if you want to speak about the Egyptian concept and use an actually Egyptian term, use Sa wari ❤️ ————————————————————————————————————————— 🔵 Description and location It is the deepest part of the temple: a small enclosed place, tightly sealed, because no one entered it except the High Priest only, and in some festivals, the king as well. It had to be at the very end of the temple and on the main axis. That means if we drew a line dividing the temple into two halves, it had to be exactly in the center. Inside it was placed the statue of the temple’s neter (deity), and it was usually designed so that light would not reach it under normal circumstances. It had to be built so that the whole temple was filled with light, but the light gradually decreased the closer one came to it. ————————————————————————————————————————— 🟢 Rituals Every morning at dawn, the High Priest had to open the Sa wari, light incense, apply perfumes, present offerings, and recite certain hymns. Then he would close it and leave, and it would be opened again the next day. Except when there was an important festival. In that case, the king himself had to perform this ritual, and the statue would be brought out on a ceremonial boat for celebration so the common people could see it. ————————————————————————————————————————— 🟡 Symbolism The construction of the temple: The temple was built in a special style so that there was a lot of light outside, and the farther in you went, the dimmer it became until you reached the Sa wari. Reason: Because it symbolized the idea of creation: the beginning from darkness, chaos, and water (Nun) into our illuminated cosmos. ————————————————————————————————————————— The statue: The statue was placed there and shut inside. Reason: Not because the statue itself was being worshipped, but because it symbolized the presence of the neter on earth in order to complete the religious rites, on the understanding that a part of the deity’s spirit could enter the statue. That is why not everyone had the right to enter that place, so that no one would disturb the neter. ————————————————————————————————————————— Every morning: The priest opened the chamber every day at dawn. Reason: As a symbol of the sunrise of Ra, and of him giving life to that neter. In Egyptian belief, many of the netjeru received life when Ra shone upon them, so this act represented the first time Ra opened life for them. ————————————————————————————————————————— 🟣 Complications and exceptions The Great Sun God: all of the previous rules are general, but they are set aside when we speak about the Sun God, Ra, his forms, and his unions with other deities. Since he is the Sun God, he is the one who shines, so an exception had to be made for him. For example, in Ra’s sun temples, the Holy of Holies was built so that the sun itself shone upon it every day, without needing a priest to go and open it.

Today we’ll talk briefly about a famous figure, but one who’s been given… a bigger “size” than he deserves? Not sure—let’s see. ——————————————————————————————————————————- 🔴 Name and meaning 𓄑 𓂋 𓅆 𓅭 𓊨 𓏏 𓁐 Hr sa Ist Ϩⲱⲣ ⲥⲓⲎ̀ⲥⲉ Hwr si Isa Hor means: “the elevated / the distant / the one who is above.” sa Ist: “son of isa.” This title is used to distinguish him, because there were multiple “Hor” figures, and not all of them are related—an important issue to explain another time. His name in Greek is Ὧρος (Hōros), which later produced “Horus". (which i don't like using it) ——————————————————————————————————————————- 🔵 Description 1) In art/depictions: a man with a falcon head wearing the unification crown, or sometimes a falcon wearing the crown. 2) In human form: wheat-brown/darker skin, blue eyes, black hair. ——————————————————————————————————————————- 🟢 Domain / specialization Contrary to many rumors, Hor son of Isa has no special powers, except that he represents rule and kingship on earth. His only real specialization is kingship and protecting the Pharaoh. Linking him to the sky, sun, moon, etc. is the result of mixing him up with other, different Hor figures. That’s why Egyptians distinguished him with the title Hor son of Isa. ——————————————————————————————————————————- 🟡 Family - Father: Osir - Mother: Isa - Uncles: Set and Hor-Wer - Aunt: Nebtu - Cousins: Anub, Wepwawet, Sobek, the Four Sons of Hor - Grandfather: Geb - Grandmother: Nut - Great-grandfather: Shu - Great-grandmother: Tefnut - Highest ancestor: Ra
