Why are Asian parents so unsuccessful in their careers? Florfeazon @ Google My parents have been pressuring me to win a full scholarship from a top college and work at Google when I grow up since age 17. They wanted me to make a 6-figure TC. Yet somehow they couldn’t even make 50k adjusted for inflation when they were my age. I won a full scholarship from their dream college but they only went to Stony Brook University. Not only my parents, but I notice most Asian parents are like this. Do they not realize their child has their genes? These parents act like they work at Google themselves. Meanwhile they give bad career advice like, “Don’t do LeetCode, that’s like a video game! Get a PhD instead!” Then they yell at the kid for not listening to their bad career advice. @blind_feed

Job market seems to be be really good? omelettedu @ Google Everyone says the job market is terrible but I haven't been seeing that. Can anyone weigh in and give some context? I got laid off from Google but started looking externally about a month ago so the timing is perfect. I've got technical phone screens scheduled every day for the next two weeks and am in talks with even more companies. Some cool startups where I'd trade TC for scope and novelty, sure, but also a lot of big companies. Meta, Apple, Netflix, Rippling, Snowflake, Disney, Amazon (turned down their recruiter tho). About one third referrals, one third recruiters reaching out, and one third cold applying via LinkedIn (this one surprised me the most). So... why is every Blind post acting like we're in the DotCom crash or 2009? Is it that more junior people are most impacted? Is getting interviews easy but the hiring bar is insanely high? Or am I just special? Prev TC: 400k Targeted TC: 200-600k depending on company size, level, impact, and how cool the work seems. YOE: ~9 (decent mix of growth hacking, I/O bound performance optimization, and most recently a lot of data pipeline stuff as well as your standard dev work) @blind_feed

How bad is the tech market really? mywayz @ Google I was affected by the layoffs at Google so starting to look for a new job. I keep seeing people saying the tech market is terrible right now. With SWE at Google and Amazon on my resume, and a undergrad and masters in CS from a top 25 university, will I still likely have a tough time finding a job in today’s market? I see plenty of job postings in LinkedIn, but I keep seeing posts about how they’re not actually hiring or that it’s really selective, is that true? I’m also ok with my liquid TC going as low as 200k, so I wouldn’t necessarily be looking for exclusively jobs paying 300k+ Prev TC 300k 3.5 YOE @blind_feed

I got laid off from a company years ago. At times, I still have minor PTSD. It feels weird to say it, and this is obviously not comparable to more traumatic events. I got laid off with a "hey do you have a moment to chat" near the end of the day. I was blindsided when I walked into a meeting with skip and HR. To this day, if my EM sends me a vague message to meet, I have a mini panic attack, I get a pit in my stomach. I start thinking "what did I do wrong, no way he can fire me, I'm working on important projects!! I just got an exceeds" It takes a few minutes for me to calm down and realize things are okay. I just wanted to write this for anyone who has had a similar experience, you aren't alone. @blind_feed
