With or Without Co-Founder? whatsnext🧐 @ Google I’m an L6 IC with an extensive background in AI and PhD from top-3. A friend of mine just graduated from a PhD from the same school — we had an overlap for 3 years. He had 3 Yoe as a SWE IC before PhD. We have been working an idea for 6 months that didn’t work out, and are trying something new. For the new idea, I’m trying to see if I should go solo or with my co-founder. In the last 6 months I have noticed followings: Positive signs: + have been friends for many years and I respect his tech skills. If he wants to implement a huge product he can do it. + it’s better to have a companion as this is long journey + We have a team of two PhDs from top-3 school working on an idea that is at the intersection of our interest. Alarming signs that I noticed: + I have a NW of 1M, he has an NW of 50K. More personal run way for me and he is stressed. + I am workaholic — can easily put 10h a day whereas he has phases of ups and downs but overall will deliver — he is definitely more laid back specially after grad school’s pressure. So, he basically slows me down a bit. + I noticed I’m a 10X more ambitious person — this is a result of personality difference and NW difference imho. I want you to build the next Google, he wants to cash out a few mills — I know there is huge change that we make 0 but I’m trying to explain our differences I really want to be fair and nice but make the right biz decision. VP acting strange towards me? Or am I crazy? przm @ 25YO F working at big global tech company as an IC. 2 months ago we got a new VP and he’s been acting with lots of “favoritism” towards me? 1. Since 2 weeks ago he’s been asking me to attend meetings he holds with his manager and their peers (all director level) and I just sit there and smile. He even asks me to create their private group slack channels and I said “ok, I’ll create it and remove myself afterwards” and he’d say “no need to remove yourself” with a huge smile on his face…He’d even tell the other managers in our org that I specifically was with him at the meetings, as if that’s a brag. I saw the reaction of the other managers and they were definitely shocked 2. Now this week he even asks me to present at meetings to the same group. After I present, he would says stuff like “your presentation was the best part of my day” Is this normal or is something fishy? I only recently graduated with an undergrad with barely any work experience so this feels weird, also I’m not his executive assistant or anything. Haven’t told my direct manager about all this yet.. Finally got an offer What to d0 @ Google In December, I was laid off from #Google where I was an L6 with a total compensation of $420,000. After 75 days (15days in grace period) of learning, searching, interviews, I received my first verbal offer from #Snowflake for an IC3 role with a total compensation of $460,000. Although the compensation isn't as high and role is downleveled and it requires relocation to the Bay Area, I'm still happy to have received an offer. Thanks to my H1B visa situation. I also received an inclination of an offer from #Amazon today for an L5 position. I'm not sure about the exact numbers, but it doesn't require relocation, I think compensation might be lower than Snowflake. Additionally, I have interviews scheduled with #Meta and #Peloton next week. Despite applying for over 30 roles at TikTok over the past two months, I just received my first response from them and looks like finally stars are aligned in my favour. Thank you for entire Blind community for supporting and referals in worst phase of my life. Question : If I decline the offer from Amazon, will they consider me again? Is the one-year clause for reconsideration for Team Match still applicable nowadays at Amazon? Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. @blind_feed

What do Netflix engineers work on jhllcvjm @ Meta Genuinely curious: the product is very mature. It’s mostly new contents driven business. There are not much AI needed. For people who didn’t get the point: You can imagine the scale and complexity of content recommendations are completely different at Netflix vs Meta. There are only 1000s of movies available at Netflix in total. There are billions of new posts created everyday at FB. I don’t think Netflix needs much AI for content recommendations. That’s an overkill. Rule based should work just fine. What do they do besides maintenance? @blind_feed

Cold turkey from alcohol results after 14 days! DLBt56 @ New Male age 31 Just wanted to share my progress - maybe it will help someone out there dealing with an alcohol problem. Heavy daily drinker for the last two years. Minimum bottle of wine or 6-8 beers per night. Gained 40 pounds. After 2 weeks going cold turkey, here are some Fitbit results. It was rough the first two days, then smooth sailing. No urge for alcohol anymore. - Resting heart rate dramatically reduced (improved) from 75 bpm 1 year average to 62 bpm in 14 days - Sleep score 42 average improved to 86 average after 14 days. More deep sleep and REM. Less awakenings - Mood significantly improved - lost 7 pounds (mostly water weight but feel way less bloated). Eating healthier definitely helps. No late night DoorDash garbage food Now, I hope to incorporate cardio and maybe some strength training to get back to my normal self. Lost in codebase pot.luck @ Amazon I'm a senior SDE six months in on my current assignment. The codebase I'm working with is massive and is primarily C++ based. It takes me hours to understand call hierarchy of functions and which attributes are encapsulated under which structures to make progress towards a feature. I sometimes feel I can save hours if my team members can direct me to correct code pointers but they just ask me to use code search and even ridicule me for needing too much help as a senior. I feel quite low about myself. I can't push too much as I have young kids who need my time. I was an L64 at Microsoft before and was doing fairly well but I am struggling as an L6 here. Am I just an incompetent engineer who doesn't belong at AWS? What should I do? Also, the L7 on my team kind of complained to my manager that my velocity is slow and my code is sloppy for an L6. Why do people pretend climate change isn’t real? jpmc_ds @ ex-JPMorgan Chase I’ve looked around a lot of “climate skeptic” websites and arguments but never found anything that makes sense. Dumping millions of tons of greenhouse gas into the atmosphere constantly would obviously change the temperature. I’ve also seen people say “there’s nothing we can do about it!” but that seems peabrained; there are tons of things we can do and a lot of them are actually good for the economy (e.g. building highspeed rail and bike lanes, solar panels, wind farms etc.). @blind_feed
