Going from Amazon to VMware is culture shock DeucesUp @ VMware At Amazon everything is about truth seeking, productivity, and getting stuff done. At VMware it’s a culture of babying, stalling, throwing wrenches in things with silly ideas, making tiny details into mountains, and horrible prioritization. Could understand if this happened on the front lines but I’m talking about leadership doing all of this. Feel like I’m going crazy. TC: $250k 10+ YOE @blind_feed

If You Like Japanese Culture then You Will Love Ancient China RoundPanda @ Meta Japan in some ways has preserved the culture of Tang dynasty China better than China itself. Japan worshiped and admired China during the Tang dynasty and absorbed much of China’s culture during that time. Due to Japan’s relative isolation and its disdain for China’s relative decline in influence and power after the fall of the Tang dynasty, Japan maintained what it had learned with some minor changes. While modern Japanese culture is not identical to Tang dynasty Chinese culture it is probably the closest thing to it. Here are some Japanese cultural items and their Chinese origins. Kimono: nearly direct copy of Chinese hanfu including the massive belt. Katana: descended from the Tang single edged sword. This includes the famous method of folding the blade hundreds of times. Japanese armor: descended from Tang dynasty armor. Flag attached to a soldier’s back: same thing was used in China. Sashimi and sushi: came from Chinese ā€œkuaiā€. Japanese cuisine in general: Tang dynasty cuisine Japanese poetry: Tang poems Japanese etiquette: Tang dynasty etiquette Japanese topknot: Chinese topknot Japanese practice of kneeling on the ground: standard Chinese way of sitting until mid-Tang dynasty. Japanese architecture: Tang dynasty architecture Japanese Buddhism: Chinese Buddhism @blind_feed

LeetCode Coach/Study Buddy iha6Hg @ Dropbox The time has come. PIP has come for my soul. Time to start interviewing. I hate LeetCode, with a passion. It’s impractical and boring. I’ve avoided it for 12y by flaunting my system design skills and culture fit smooth talking. Unfortunately in this economy; much like a penguin it won’t fly. Time to bite the bullet and grind. I’m looking for a study buddy to help me make the process less grueling. I am very social and think out loud. So I’m thinking we can get on a zoom call and tackle problems together. Or I’m also willing to pay a coach if it’s somewhat affordable (I would be looking at 20h or so). Like a personal trainer a lot of the job will be babysitting me and cheerleading. If you want, I can do an exchange. I will teach you everything you need to know about FE system design (I wrote a book on it). Or I’ll coach you on being smooth and charismatic. Also much like a penguin. TC 440K (soon to be 0). With your help…the sky is the limit. āœˆļø 🐧 @blind_feed

Is Math Racist? RoundPanda @ Meta For 2500 years the vast majority of contributions to math has been done by white men. Is there something about math that predisposes it to white men more than to other groups of people? If not then what is the reason for this disparity? @blind_feed

Why do I feel cold always? So fed up gemini1234 @ Google (in my 30s, female, slim, Asian. Don’t workout & I’m vegan) Is something wrong with me? This affects me badly in many ways. Anyone else faced the same problem? Any solution? - When I enter any Uber, Airport, office, conference etc, I feel cold, so I end up in a hoodie looking like a tasteless tech nerd - Fashion choices: can’t wear halter tops, sleeveless, short skirts even though I keep buying them. When I do I will have to pair it with a jacket always making me look the same most of the time. It affects how I feel about myself :( - shower in very hot water as I avoid luke warm temperature also even when it’s not at all good for my skin and causing damage :( - can’t wear open toe/heel shoes/sandals etc since I would feel cold in air-conditioned places, and so I need to stick to socks and shoes. Again, hate the way I look. I have a good wardrobe, but end up wearing the same type of stuff just beacuse I feel cold - find it hard to leave the bed in colder weather mainly because I cant give up on the warmth. End up starting my day later than usual and fall behind on work etc making my night longer leading to bad sleep schedules - When I feel cold, I can’t focus at all (classrooms, meeting rooms, office - you name it). Most of the time I feel the need to even wear a benie over my head (feel cold at the top of my head) and cover my ears to keep myself warm when everyone around isn’t feeling as cold at all - Can’t drink most beverages offered at conferences, events etc since it is always cold and has ice in it, so I end up hungry and thirsty by the end of it all #wellness #health #rto #officelife #burnout #mentalhealth #depression @blind_feed

Have near $2m in savings, where should I move to if Biden gets re-elected? chvanmu8 @ Google I'm worried about US democracy, freedom of speech, rising levels of crime, open borders. If Biden gets re-elected this will be the end of democracy, and maybe even the US will fall apart? Where should I move to? Looking for a quiet place to raise a family, physically safe, without government bothering me. @blind_feed

How to force kid to study at night? ddsh @ Microsoft Kid is at grade 4 and bad at math. I bought online courses for him. But he couldn’t sit there more than 2 hours. We need to keep monitoring him every 30 minutes. It’s exhausted for us to do it every night because I need to prepare leetcode and SD. Any one has similar experience? Nothing can motivate him so we consider a combination of punishments @blind_feed

Chasing high TC is a waste of life ĀÆ\_(惄)_/… @ WW Higher TC will always mean more work. There are so many hours in a day and you only have so much time to be alive and healthy. My point is, work is never ending and if you succeed at work you will be rewarded with more work. TC: 0 NW: 500k @blind_feed

H4 not laid off but US citizens on food stamps DJSi07 @ New I used to work at a FAANG company until I was laid off last year. It's known as a PIP factory. I recruited tech folks for their PXT org. I was there for two years. I noticed that every U.S. citizen recruiter born and educated in the U.S. in that org was laid off and we are all still unemployed. I'm all out of savings and on food stamps. My condo is in foreclosure. Every H4 spouse visa recruiter is still there in the PXT org and working. How does this work in a recession? There's no shortage of recruiters in a downturn. Millions of H1 visa folks are waiting for their green card. Millions of H4 spouses are still working doing what I did at the FAANG company, and I am on food stamps and my condo is in foreclosure. I am going to become homeless. @blind_feed

I’m Sorry to Say This but H1Bs Should not be the Priority for Any US Company Right Now clockapp @ TikTok Before I go on, I want to say I have no problem at all with the H1B Program in the US. I think it’s a great means for getting talent and it makes our companies more diverse. That said, these are very tough times. I feel very bad that they are but this is the nature of this industry at this point. As a US citizen who has worked abroad, it was extremely difficult to get work outside the US. Companies legit had to demonstrate that they needed the US worker because they had tried legitimately and failed to fill the role with a citizen from their own country. I recognize that there are many many H1Bs who were let go in the tech cuts. Some of them face return to their own countries. But there were also many US citizens who lost their jobs. Respectfully, if it comes to filling any new open role in the states it should be going to a US citizen over an H1B 5YoE 525 TC @blind_feed

DO NOT f*cking invite me over to your house if you have those stupid low-prestige circular bowl toilets ryeu6362 @ Knight Barry Title Group Seriously, my girlfriend and I got invited over to hangout this weekend and when I go into the bathroom, they have those tiny circular toilets. To make matters worse, it had small capacity so it didn’t flush correctly. I’m just like, are you serious right now? It’s 2024. STOP buying these trash toilets. It needs to be those long bowl toilets. Circular bowl toilets are low prestige and everyone knows your junk is going to touch the porcelain since they’re so tiny. The right toilets are those long ones where you are comfortable. It’s rude as f*ck to invite people over and you don’t even have decent equipment in the bathroom @blind_feed

Moving from Rajesh to Roy! RajaBhoj @ Meta Here is how you move from Rajesh to Roy 1. Whitewash your name 2. Whitewash your children's name 3. Change your hairstyle. Get a hair cut once a week. 4. Stop cribbing that you miss your parents. Adopt local parents. Get your home-country parents to adopt your cousin etc 5. Change your accent 6. Call your home country a hell-hole / shit-hole whenever possible 7. Stop eating your home country cuisine. Call it bad for health etc 8. Speak to your kids only in English. Don't let them learn your original mother tongue 9. Speak out for banning H1Bs. But, after you get your GC. Be an excellent ladder-puller 10. Call for stopping outsourcing to your home country. Excuse might be time-zone, higher billing rate, poor quality etc. 11. Send your kids to Public school and still call them expensive 12. Call for sanctions against your home country because it doesn't match the foreign policies of the USA. Feel free to add! PS: Wear loads of Deo! @blind_feed

What's up with liberal Americans. bNcs77 @ Google I was having lunch with one of my teammates and somehow the southern border issue came up when I mentioned I was going to San Diego this long weekend. He seemed surprised to know that, I was against illegal immigration as I myself am an immigrant. Does he not know the difference between legal and illegal immigration. I know those people entering through the border want to have a better life, but doesn't America have to right to control when they want to let in? Even poor countries have stricter border policies. What do you folks think. @blind_feed

Low net worth gynfyn @ Oracle I see everyone on here who has 1 million dollar NW after 5 years in USA. Here are some mistakes I made as an immigrant so others don’t make the same. 1.) Buying a 70k car right after graduating. Was young and dumb 2.) Not buying real estate in 2017 because I was afraid of bubble. Housing always goes up, always buy. 3.) Playing with options. You always lose in the long term 4.) Giving money to family. Always good to help family but never give large amounts. I paid for both of my siblings college tuition(120k+) and they ended up ghosting me. 5.) Not buying tech stocks(Nvidia, Amazon, etc) 6.) Never job hopped. Got a offer from Nvidia in 2019 and declined. YOE: 9 Net worth: 400k @blind_feed
