Monday of the Twenty-second Week in Ordinary Time
Smart leaders prepare a new manifesto, make passionate speeches and do anything to win the acclaim of people. Jesus did the opposite. He quoted an old Isaiah manifesto, made a simple speech and never watered down anything to fit the mould of people. Clearly, Jesus’ focus was on being a good leader never an ambitious one.
Yet, His goodness was often sidelined, especially by His own people. In the Gospel of today, we see the fickleness of the human heart. As long as the Nazarenes heard a message and saw signs that enamoured them, they were ‘astonished by Jesus’ graciousness’. But the moment Jesus refused to give in to their demand for more flamboyance — in an attempt to further their quest for God — their astonishment turned into rage, almost instantly.
Jesus came, as St. Paul says, to preach of the power of the Cross. Miracles are merely a gateway to the power of God — a power that moves away from wonder-working to the wonder of redemption?
Where do we push our journey with Jesus towards — the cliff or the Cross?
Do we go with Jesus to the Cross, or with those who would rid themselves of Him at the edge of a cliff? | 108 |

Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
St Paul, in the second reading, mentions three wills that vie for prominence — our will, the will of others and God’s will. God often loses this battle. But he keeps coming back to convince us that His way is the best. Hence, the English poet Francis Thompson aptly titled God, “the Hound of Heaven”.
God’s hounding is not brute force; it is gentle, gradual and loving. Jeremiah is so captivated by it that his will cannot resist God any more — God’s love and His word feels imprisoned in his very bones. He cannot help himself but set God free in his life. When the whole nation mocked and belittled him, Jeremiah’s sustenance was the memory that, “God seduced him and Jeremiah let himself be seduced”.
The Gospel portrays a Peter who tries to superimpose his will over God’s. On hearing Jesus’ first passion prediction, Peter tries to strategically alter Jesus’ desire to achieve victory through suffering. Peter’s will can never allow that to happen to his master. But Jesus’ will is already attuned to His Father.
Whose will do we give ourselves to; and when others come to us whose will do we manifest? | 96 |

This deeply affected Archbishop Jurgens, who died on September 28, 1916. From 1916–1919, there was a severe shortage of personnel until Archbishop Alban Goodier S.J. was appointed. Memorial of the Passion of St John the Baptist
A true prophet offers two things to the culture he engages with — prophetic critique and prophetic energising. In the former he challenges the beliefs and actions of the people in light of God’s commands; in the latter he energises the criticised people to attain the sanctity God desires.
To do all this requires formation. It requires training, because a prophet often goes against majority opinion. The first reading captures this reinforcement from God in the words “Brace yourself for action —more appropriately — for reaction from the people.”
But, how does one accomplish this? Not by going on the offence but by defence - by becoming a fortified city, a pillar of iron and bronze. This was John the Baptist, who stood against injustice without backing down — not even in the face of prison and impending death. His witness was so effective that Herod, felt judged and critiqued, but the humanity within Herod was also energised. He was energised by a holy fear for he “knew John to be a good and holy man and gave him his protection.”
After a while, however, Herod couldn’t accept a prophet. Can we? | 113 |

St Augustine, Bishop and Doctor
One often wonders, how the Cross can be the center of our Christian faith. How can a symbol of defeat and death become one of wisdom and strength? St Paul instructs the Corinthians that it is foolish to solve this illogic using philosophical words or theories. Only an experience of it can open up this power that “makes God’s foolishness wiser than human wisdom.”
Saint Augustine’s life is an apt testimony of this. Remembered as one of the greatest thinkers on the Christian faith, the young Augustine had earlier subscribed to many worldly and heretical philosophies. Only after seventeen years of prayer and sacrifice by his mother, St. Monica, and encounters with the saintly bishop Ambrose, was Augustine able to surrender himself to the mystery of the cross.
Augustine’s life has forever inspired those trying to break a bad habit, which often constitutes a cross. From a life of loose living, parties and worldly ambitions, Augustine made a complete turnaround — becoming a faithful Christian, a priest, a bishop and a saint. His later life was spent repenting over his former life to ensure never to offend God again. Although Augustine’s fervent prayer was “Too late have I loved you O Lord”, his life gives us hope that we can never be too late for God. | 115 |
