Fortune 500 companies hire McKinsey to tell them how to restructure. Central banks hire McKinsey. Militaries hire McKinsey. If you want the smartest people in the room to tell you what to do, you call McKinsey. On August 19, 2026, Belgian authorities seized €65.2 million from McKinsey. The announcement came on September 4. French and Belgian prosecutors issued a joint communiqué. The seizure represents 96% of the estimated tax loss identified by French investigators. 96%. Not a round number. Not a punitive fine. The prosecutors calculated the damage to the euro, then seized almost exactly that amount. Precision enforcement. Here's what the investigation found. McKinsey's French entities nearly 600 employees, €329 million in revenue in 2020 alone allegedly paid zero corporate tax in France between 2011 and 2020. Nine years. Zero. The mechanism: transfer pricing. Revenue earned in France. Work performed in France. Clients in France. But the profit was booked to the American parent company through internal pricing arrangements that eliminated the French tax obligation entirely. Money earned here. Profit recorded there. It used transfer pricing. The tool is different. The architecture is identical. Move the value across a border. Eliminate the obligation in the jurisdiction where the work was done. The investigation started with a question. In 2022, the French Senate convened an inquiry into the growing influence of private consulting firms on public policy. The question wasn't about tax. It was about power: why is the French government paying hundreds of millions of euros to private consultants to design public policy? The inquiry produced a report. The report found that McKinsey's French entities had paid no corporate tax for nearly a decade. The Senate referred the finding to the National Financial Prosecutor's Office. The prosecutor opened a criminal investigation in March 2022 for aggravated tax fraud and aggravated money laundering of tax fraud proceeds. Witnesses and suspects were questioned in 2025 and 2026. The French prosecutor requested assistance from the Brussels Prosecutor's Office. Belgian authorities executed the seizure on August 19, 2026. Senate inquiry. Criminal referral. Four-year investigation. Cross-border cooperation. Precision seizure. Four years from question to €65 million frozen. They watched. Then they moved. This is the layer this series hasn't reached until now. The series documented enforcement against banks UBS fined $125 million for compliance failures. Kristi and I will spend the day making pasta sauce and preparing our veggies for the winter months. Weird year out back with our fruit trees and our gardens. We had a spring freeze hit us in early June and the freeze destroyed the buds on our fruit trees and our grape vine. We normally get a few thousand cherries and lots of plums and grapes but this season was destroyed and we got zero. However, we have had the best year ever in the outdoor gardens and the greenhouse. Kristi uses the food processer and turns the different squash into a has brown type of preparation and adds onions and bell peppers and hot peppers from the garden and then freezes into meal size packages. We are making our first batch of pasta sauce with our tomatoes this morning. Looks like we have a few hundred tomatoes out there yet to harvest. We have a huge selection of large pumpkin size squash we will make soup with in a month or so.
