a) Get good money + ESOPs
b) Founders are from IIT/IIM and culture is very fast paced
c) Learn to build stuff fast and can learn newest tech too (bcz startups implement new tech)
d) Small teams might increase bonding between people
e) Plan to start a startup few years down the line
f) Flexible work timings
g) Good Growth of career (Promotions will take place with performance instead of YoE)
h) Can join MNC after 7-8 YoE at a terminal position
-Some People go into MNC’s and continue to remain in there for 7-8 years and then go to Startup
a) Good brand value. If you’re from Tier-2,3 college or Non-CS background brand name always helps you in your career
b) Focus on Code quality instead of fast deliverables. (If you learn good coding principles in early stages then continue to abide by them later on too)
c) Work on Scale and single feature will affect clients at global level
d) Promotions could be focused on YoE instead of just performance.
Choose whichever you want to.
If you have any questions. Dont DM. keep them in group only.
Thanks.
Hi Guys, this is going to be a long message.
There are a lot of queries regarding which DSA course to choose, which language to prepare, which companies are good etc etc. I will be taking down questions 1 by 1. Also, please keep in mind these are just my opinions, feel free to agree or disagree. I am not interested in arguing and proving that I am right.
About me: 2020 CS grad from Tier-2 College. Got campus placement @ product based US company (Package: 6 LPA + Joining + Retention Bonus). From the last year, I have been improving my DSA and problem solving ability and from the past 2-3 months I have been actively interviewing for job switch. I am blessed to receive offers from Suprdaily (by Swiggy), DP World (Dubai based), Goldman Sachs. Also faced rejections from Arcesium, D. E. Shaw, Revolut.
1. Which language to choose?
Ans: You wont work on single language in your job. So, dont worry much about it. Fundamental languages are C++, Java, Python, JS. According to market trends in India and world, highest number of jobs are available in Java, Python, JS. Most of the coders who do C++ have to learn Java in their job. I have also heard from friends doing C++ that OOPs and M.C. Rounds are better done in Java. So, my preference would be Java over C++. I have learnt Java from College and continue to work in that.
Conclusion: For DSA choose Java, C++ and for development you can use Java (Spring), Python (Django), JS (Node, React). Doesn’t matter in college, you should be able to build stuff.
2. How shall we study DSA? Which course to choose?
Ans: 1 year ago, when I was trying to find resources for DSA. I didn’t find free resources much good. Of course the questions would be taken from GFG, LC but the content should be curated and in a structured manner. I was ready to pay 10k for a course at that time.
Somehow, I found Pepcoding and I liked the belief and vision of its founder. So, I chose that.
Why I chose Pepcoding?
-Sumeet was the first person to say that DSA can be finished and you will reach a sufficient level to not study it any more. (biggest point for me, as I thought i will always need to study it every time I switch)
-A sufficient number of questions like list of 500, 600 etc is better in my opinion than unlimited questions on GFG or LC. (Sufficient number is achievable where as unlimited is not, although it does not mean you complete questions fast by just watching solutions)
-The way pepcoding’s content is curated on its free resources is damn good. For learning anything, you need 2 things:
a) Good resource to learn, (i.e. questions of good quality and sufficient number)
b) Navigating between that resource (i.e. questions in the list should promote re-inforced learning and as you go ahead your difficulty should match)
-The way he teaches stuff is absolutely brilliant. You start liking DSA even if you are not able to solve. Even today, I am solving questions when I dont need to.
visit: pepcoding.com/resources, choose Level-1 for absolute beginner and level-2 for intermediate (Free of cost)
3. Free or Paid?
Why free?
-Great content at No money
-learning on your own will help you in the job too (because you cant always pay for a new tech to learn in job)
-builds discipline (without it, you cant do)
Why paid?
-Community to learn from, always in a competition with students of batch
-Doubt support and TA’s available to answer your query fast. (lots of queries in starting)
-maybe some ed-tech are offering resume reviews and placement offerings
Choose whichever you like.
4. Which companies?
-There are a number of good companies and some guys have made youtube videos and excel sheets providing list of good companies. @Soumyajitbhattacharyay
5. MNCs vs Startups during early years of career?
-Some people go into startups and keep on jumping them after 1 or half year. What’s the benefit of that?
