"Regarding our eternal salvation it is true that one must not distinguish between man and woman, or between king and a shepherd, or between a German and a Frenchman. Regard policy however, we have what St. Paul declares here; for our Lord Jesus Christ did not come to mix up nature, or to abolish what belongs to the preservation of decency and peace among us....Regarding the kingdom of God (which is spiritual) there is no distinction or difference between man and woman, servant and master, poor and rich, great and small. Nevertheless, there does have to be some order among us, and Jesus Christ did not mean to eliminate it, as some flighty and scatterbrained dreamers [believe]." Calvin, serm. on 1Cor. 11:2-3

False dichotomy. The soul who sins shall die. God will not punish anyone for the sins of their pastor.

“But as it is now our purpose to discourse of the visible Church, let us learn, from her single title of Mother, how useful, nay, how necessary the knowledge of her is, since there is no other means of entering into life unless she conceive us in the womb and give us birth, unless she nourish us at her breasts, and, in short, keep us under her charge and government, until, divested of mortal flesh, we become like the angels (Mt. 22:30). For our weakness does not permit us to leave the school until we have spent our whole lives as scholars. Moreover, beyond the pale of the Church no forgiveness of sins, no salvation, can be hoped for, as Isaiah and Joel testify (Isa. 37:32; Joel 2:32). To their testimony Ezekiel subscribes, when he declares, “They shall not be in the assembly of my people, neither shall they be written in the writing of the house of Israel” (Ezek. 13:9); as, on the other hand, those who turn to the cultivation of true piety are said to inscribe their names among the citizens of Jerusalem. For which reason it is said in the psalm, “Remember me, O Lord, with the favour that thou bearest unto thy people: O visit me with thy salvation; that I may see the good of thy chosen, that I may rejoice in the gladness of thy nation, that I may glory with thine inheritance” (Ps. 106:4, 5). By these words the paternal favour of God and the special evidence of spiritual life are confined to his peculiar people, and hence the abandonment of the Church is always fatal.” ~ Calvin, John. Institutes. 4.1.4

The Mosaic civil code - what we might call "Old Testament Justice" has an ethos that can best be summarized as "Hang 'em High." If you kill, rape, maim or steal a human being, then you die once the matter is proven in court. Other crimes have less severe punishments, but God gave Israel a model of justice that wasn't messing around. Most Christian countries in history have held this basic sense of justice, and they were blessed historically. Heck, non-Christian countries that do this sort of thing aren't doing too poorly either, because at the very least they're fulfilling the Romans 13 obligation to punish wickedness. That said, firing squad > stoning.

What Does the Rainbow Mean in the Bible? It was a promise before it was a perversion. After punishing the world for its gross sin, and essentially recreating the world afresh, God said, “This is the sign of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: I set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. (Gen. 9:12-13). The New Bible Commentary Revised observes: My bow translates qeset, the usual meaning of which is the weapon. Thus, the recurring rainbow imposed on the retreating storm by the shining again of the sun is God's battle bow laid aside, a token of grace staying the lighting shafts of wrath. There is also a self-malediction involved: the bow is stretched towards the heavens, towards God himself and away from us. God swears by His own name and ultimately bears the curse for us. As one medieval poem put it: My bow between you and me in the firmament shall be, by true tokening that you may see that such vengeance shall cease.... The string is turned towards you and towards me is bent the bow, that such weather shall never show and this I promise thee.    It should come as no surprise that the token of God's promise to limit his wrath is used as a way to further provoke it. But make no mistake; God will exact judgement as they store up wrath for the final day. How should we as Christians view the rainbow? We should thank God for every appearance we see, and remember his faithfulness. St. Peter tells us baptism is the antitype of Noah's salvation through the flood, so we should also remember our baptism and our new washed life in Christ.

A blessed Trinity Sunday to all! A common practice in the church is to celebrate this feast day with the confession of the Athanasian Creed. While mainstream scholars and church historians doubt his authorship, this article defends the church's traditional view that the great saint was actually its mastermind. https://open.substack.com/pub/protestantpost/p/who-wrote-the-athanasian-creed?r

This kind of argument would hold more water if the exclusive pslamodist churches were any more conservative than their counterparts. As it is, they empirically are not. I'm not dismissing it as a slippery slope fallacy; I'm pointing out the slippery slope of liberalism has affected everyone: pslamodists, high church, low church, every form of government, etc. No one is immune.

I'm seeing a lot of takes such as "XYZ was an immoral war; therefore we shouldn't honor those veterans." Retarded take. My ancestors fought on both sides of the Civil War. In fact, those ancestors married into each others' families just 50 years after the war. That was the correct approach. None of this means that we have to pretend like there wasn't a clear and unambigious morally correct party in the Civil War (I'm speaking of course of the Confederacy). Same goes for our other wars. So just chill out, stop virtue signalling, and thank a vet if you see one.

A blessed Pentecost to all! I have written about the issues pertaining to Babel and Pentecost here, here, and here. But enough of refuting errors, this year a positive preterist point from Joel. We are told explicitly that Joel 2 is fulfilled in Pentecost, but the entire monologue pertains to God's actions right before the Day of the Lord. If interpreted as the last day, St. Peter's interpretation makes no sense. But if we understand it as the destruction of Jerusalem, it makes perfect sense. And a paedobaptist point from Joel: If "it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy," then what reason can possibly given for withholding baptism (and for that matter the Supper)? If God has poured out His Spirit on all flesh, explicitly including our sons and daughters, and we receive the Spirit through the Son, then for those children who already possess both the Spirit and the Son, and thereby belong to the Father, there can be no objection to giving them the Spirit by Holy Baptism and the Son by the Eucharist.

Today is Wagner's 213th birthday. To celebrate, on my commute I listened to a analysis of the contrapuntal techniques in Die Meistersinger. Known for being a vieled commentary on Wagner's musical philosophy, it's also a sweet love story set in the mid 1500s. The protagonist Walther notices the love interest Eva in a church service. Considering its temporal setting, it isn't a Catholic mass; rather, the choir sings the familiar Lutheran chorale Da zu dir der Heiland kam (When the Savior came to thee). Specifically the service is the eve of the feast of St. John the Baptist (Johannisnacht), reflecting a liturgical calendar while Reformed, still deeply entrenched in tradition. And those familiar will no doubt notice this is the entire theme of the work: Walther learning to respect the Meistersinger's guild and rules and rituals while also remaining faithful to the "true music" taught to him by the birds and forests. As Wagner's only comedy, its happy ending makes the 4 hour wait worth it, and can be a great on ramp to Wagner for those unanquainted with him.

The Ascension of Our Lord (Acts 1:9-11) And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight. And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.
