How do you decide how to spend your money?
As an elite athlete playing professional sports, I quickly realized my success and accumulation of wealth and influence was ordained by God. I knew there were many athletes better than me.
Scripture makes it clear that God determines who will create wealth and be honored, and it is at His discretion we are made great and given strength!
Not too far into my career I came to grips with the concept that He had given me these resources and that I had to make a choice. Would I use them to build my own kingdom or would I use them to build His? Would my money just serve myself or would it contribute to the common good and help give the opportunity for every person on earth to encounter the truth and grace of the Good News?
It is critical we understand that we have a defined season to make the most of every opportunity because of this kind of privilege: we have time, talent, financial capital, influence, and relationships at our disposal. We are stewards of them all.
Financial currency is not the only one of value. Currencies such as our influence and our talent can accomplish things that have eternal consequence even more than our money can. We want to offer to God all we have and all we are to be used for His glory on earth.
Our role in sports gives us a tremendous stewardship responsibility but also the opportunity for great Kingdom returns on investment.

From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.

How often have you had an idea that seems so foolish you were afraid to move forward?**
I've never met a leader who has said, "I've always acted on what I felt prompted to do." It can be very hard to discern the promptings of God!
The sport movement saw one of its strategies explode. What was happening around the world was truly unbelievable. It had huge potential. We needed a website with the capacity to deliver the videos and curriculum in multiple languages to fulfil this potential. It was here we hit a roadblock. The perfect name for the website was already owned by someone else and it would cost a fortune to buy the name from them.
Should we try and raise funds to buy it? Should we brainstorm an alternative web name?
Then we discovered that the company who owned the name wasn't even using it.
With very low expectations we wrote a letter to the company explaining why the name was vital and that it wouldn't be used to sell anything or make money.Ā
We were massively surprised by the response.
They gave us the web address for free!
What if we had listened to our negative thoughts and didnāt take action? We don't know what this web address is worth today, but it would be far more money than you or I could imagine or afford.

Have you or your team failed recently? What was your response?**
It surprised me when I first read the Bible, that this book intended to help us find faith, was full of people's failures and failed plans. Amazing! Maybe I expected the stories of perfect saints who always made wise decisions.
This helped me to understand that since the pioneers in the Old and New Testament often failed, I should expect my team or I to also have plans that might fail ā even after praying for guidance.
Some time ago, our team decided to find business sponsors to pay for a sports team's international trip. The plan made sense.
However, the host countryās sports authority was slow to approve the competitions, so it was too late to arrange businesses as sponsors. The plan failed, and we had to meet and develop a new plan ā a better one.
As some of our team's plans failed, we learned more from the failures than the successes. Sometimes they were small failures and sometimes they were significant. But each failure taught us to pray, evaluate and finetune the plans we felt made sense.
What is the benefit of quickly finding out your plan didn't work? The faster you fail and realize something doesn't work, the quicker you can correct your course.
Pray with your team for wisdom. Work out the plan you believe the Lord is directing you to execute.
Execute the plan even though it has risk of failure. If your plan fails, bring the team back together, acknowledge the plan didn't work, pray again, design a new plan, and try again.

Why did God place us in our sport?
It has been a very important journey for me to understand my role and unique opportunity as an elite athlete. Sure, there is my job of giving all my passion and skill to perform well as a sportsperson.
But ultimately, as a believer my mission is to know that God placed me in this sport and this team to be the best witness to Jesus. I want my teammates and even spectators to see the living God at work in me.
God has given you and me a tremendous platform because of our level of sport. The Gospel is best presented by us, the athlete, in these forums.
I have come to realize that the most powerful and authentic way to āearn the right to be heard by our teammatesā is by caring about others, serving them, and putting their interests before my own.Ā
God is never just doing one thing at once. So, just as he has gifted us to play sport well, He has also given you and me the talent and opportunity to create a platform to share with others the truth and grace found only in Him.Ā
His Word tells us āGreater love has no one than this: to lay down oneās life for oneās friendsā. This is a great picture for you and me to understand that serving is the best foundation for being able to really help teammates, opponents, and others around the sport to understand Godās love for them.

Which do you value more, disciples or money?
My guess is your immediate response is disciples ā of course disciples are the priority! Yet, my second guess is when you struggle to sleep, it is most likely about money and bills. Am I correct?
As Iāve travelled to many countries and islands, Iāve noticed the priority on making multiplying disciples in some parts of the world is much higher than in other places. Why might this be? I believe that when there is an emphasis on disciples it is because there is less money available.
In well-resourced parts of the world, money tends to go into buildings and programs. Success can seemingly be measured with these obvious and impressive results. But I donāt hear how the disciple making is happening. Are the buildings and programs producing disciples who multiply themselves? It is rare to hear this feedback.
I think it was far easier in the New Testament church to make disciples who made disciples because money was in short supply.
Today, in countries where ministry and mission funds are limited, it can operate more like the first-century church.
For those who live in the developed world, the question may be, how do we increase the priority in our churches and agencies on making disciples who make disciples?
How do we demonstrate that we are actually creating spiritually mature disciples who are making disciples as we spend money on buildings and programs? I continually ask this question of myself and my ministry.

Jesus said,Ā Therefore go and make disciples of all nations,Ā baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
