Another big difference between email marketing and other forms of marketing is that people actually want to see your email promotions! Anyone on your email list purposefully provided you with their email address because they wanted more information on your brand.
This is quite different from ads on search engines, social media, TV, magazines, and radio. Someone who comes across your ad on Facebook, Google, or while watching the morning news did not request to learn more about your brand, so they are more likely to ignore your message or even be bothered by it.
When this happens, youâre probably wasting precious ad spend because those ad viewers arenât interested.
This is where email marketing is different.
If a consumer directly provides you with their email address, it is because they specifically want to opt in to your email marketing. This means they WANT to see your ads and promotions.
They may have been tempted with a coupon or some other promotion, but it is still a much more consent-based marketing strategy.
This is part of what makes email marketing so unique and so successful!
How does email marketing work with other forms of marketing?
As we continue to further explain this form of marketing, we must also mention how it works best with other marketing efforts.
As mentioned previously, email marketing works extremely well alongside social media marketing. Thatâs why we highly recommend it.
You are able to cross-promote your companyâs social media profiles on emails with buttons requesting that your email subscribers follow you. You can also use your social media profiles to gather an email list to use in your email marketing campaigns.
There are a few ways to do this, one of which is to run a giveaway on your social media accounts that requests people provide their email address in order to enter. This is a very effective way to get subscribers without seeming pushy.
You can also simply make posts asking your social media followers to subscribe to your email list and provide a link to a form they can sign up on.
Odds are, if they were interested enough to follow your brand on social media, they will want to learn more about your brand through email, as well.
You can even set up a lead generation campaign on Facebook geared towards collecting emails which you can then use in an email marketing campaign.
Email marketing also works in conjunction with a remarketing campaign!
Oftentimes, when your website visitors are shopping online they add items to their cart and forget to finish their purchase. To combat this, you can use email marketing.
You can use emails to send cart reminders to your remarketing audience to encourage a conversion and finish their purchase.
These emails can even be personalized to fit your brand and with specific products from your online store! See the image below for an example.

How do you do email marketing?
Hereâs a simplified list of the steps for running email marketing:
You need to set your goals first
Start building a targeted email list
Know your audience and understand their pain points
Craft a convincing email content
Pick the right email marketing service tool
Plan your follow-ups
How do you start an email marketing campaign?
Before you even start developing an email marketing campaign, youâll want to set your goals and identify your audience.
What is email marketing? â Itâs incredibly versatile. Therefore, once you set the goals you want for your campaigns and identify who your audience is, you can start to customize.
With email marketing software, you can customize emails with subscribersâ names and can send out personalized emails for peopleâs birthdays.
You can even maintain separate email lists and send out different offers or promotions to different audience sets.
Not every message you come up with will resonate with every one of your subscribers, so it may be beneficial to segment your email lists and create different emails that correspond to different portions of your overall audience.
There are several tactics you can use to automate your emails to make them efficient.
You can use email templates to make your emails more cohesive or spice up a plain email design.
For small businesses, itâs always best to start with developing a simple welcome email to send as a first email to new customers.
This is a great place to start but there is a lot more you can do with email marketing. Especially, if you are using an email marketing platform or email marketing software.
What is email marketing software?
Email marketing software and automation tools make sending and monitoring email campaigns easier. For example, MailChimp and Constant Contact can be used to send out emails and monitor how your subscribers interact with your emails.
This is a great resource for any business owner that may have less time on their hands to keep track of every little detail of their email campaigns.
You can also use email marketing software to track analytics like click-through rates, deliverability, open rates, bounce rates, and conversion rates.
When it comes to email marketing, you donât want to neglect your campaigns because essentially you want to ensure they are generating a return on investment for you.
Therefore, itâs great to have tools in place that help you track these important metrics.
what is email marketing
So now that weâve answered your question about what this marketing strategy really is, you might be asking âSo does my business need email marketing?â Of course!
All businesses can benefit from email marketing, especially small businesses. Email marketing tends to be an inexpensive and easy to track marketing channel, especially in comparison to other forms of traditional marketing.
What is the benefit of email marketing over other methods of marketing?
94% of Internet users use email. Therefore, marketing through email allows you to reach a great deal of Internet users even if they are not on social media.
Furthermore, a survey found that an astounding 75% of adult online users say email marketing is actually their preferred marketing method!
If youâre not already utilizing email marketing, it is definitely something you should consider in order to reach a wider audience and strengthen your brandâs relationship with current customers.
Another benefit of email marketing is that itâs incredibly easy to track your ROI. Everything is trackable with the use of email marketing software so you can determine who is opening your emails, who is clicking onto your site through your emails, and more.
Plus, the ROI is usually very high because you donât have to put ad money behind emails to get them to the correct audience like you do with most other forms of advertising.
They are already targeted towards the ideal consumer because you are only sending emails to people who have given you permission via providing you with their email address. This makes email marketing one of the cheapest possible marketing tactics.
One little-known fact is that 66% of all emails in the U.S. are opened on mobile devices such as smartphones or tablets. If youâve been considering using a text message or SMS campaign, email marketing might actually be a better choice for you.
Email marketing works pretty much the same way as SMS marketing, but you can reach desktop users as well, and most smartphone users find emails to be less bothersome than text messages from companies.
what is email marketing
While email marketing is often used in conjunction with other forms of marketing like social media advertising and even TV and radio ads, it has its own unique set of advantages.
For example, letâs say you have an ecommerce store and youâre running a sale. When you post about the sale on social media, not all your followers will see it. Only about 1% of your followers will typically see a Facebook post unless youâve boosted it using ad dollars.
If you send an email about your sale, it is guaranteed to be put in front of every single member of your email list.

What is Email Marketing & Why Does My Business Need It?
Email marketing â a powerful content marketing technique that many ecommerce businesses use today.
You may or may not receive those automated emails businesses send when you become a new subscriber to their email list. To some they may seem pesky, but truthfully, if you utilize effective email marketing techniques, you can actually increase your customer loyalty tremendously.
The key to successful email marketing is personalization. This among other things, which weâll cover in this blog!
Email marketing is a term you may have heard before, but you may not know exactly what email marketing is.
What Is Email Marketing and How Does it Work?
No email marketing isnât just sending emails to subscribers. Thereâs actually more to it.
Email marketing is the process of sending optimized commercial messages through email to targeted consumers. It includes the process of developing promotional emails, testing, and maintaining them as well.
Email marketing can be used to increase sales, improve brand loyalty, and deliver important information.
It is a kind of direct marketing and in the past, it was used to mass-target people. Current regulations now in place are stricter on how email marketing can be used as a communication channel.
It is a direct form of marketing, similar to marketing through snail mail, but email marketing is much more efficient for your wallet and for the environment since itâs totally paperless!
Email marketing is closely linked to email advertising.
What is email advertising?
Email advertising is a form of email marketing in which recipients consent to seeing advertisements or promotional material from certain brands. This form of advertising functions by providing consumers the opportunity to opt-in to receiving this content.

What is the Benefit of Email Marketing?
Email marketing is beneficial because it is fast, efficient, and cost-effective. Using this method of marketing provides you the means of reaching out to potential customers and retaining existing ones by encouraging repeat visits to a site.
In addition, emailing is the top method email marketers use to nurture leads to convert.
So what else is email marketing used for?
Email marketing can also be used to build trust with customers over time, in order to turn them into repeat customers. Any successful business knows repeat customers are how your business will achieve sustainable growth over time.
After all, repeat customers are happy customers. And happy customers recommend your business to others. It is also an effective way to keep your customers informed about new products, sales, or special offers you are running.
People want to stay informed about your brand in real-time, and email marketing is one of the best ways to stay engaged with that audience. In fact, 28% of US online shoppers report subscribing to store or product emails in order to stay informed on brands they care about.
If you need a way to keep in contact with your customers to help them stay up-to-date with your business, start with email marketing.
Now, letâs talk about email automation.

How do I get an email list?
Youâll see the highest ROI when you build and maintain an engaged subscriber list, made up of people who want to receive your messages (and who opted in on purpose). Although building a clean list can take more work at the outset of your email marketing strategy, Mailchimp lists have built-in tools to help you along the way.
There are lots of ways to find people whoâll look forward to getting your emails, but weâve rounded up a few that work best.
To build an email list:
Create a signup form on your website. When people come to your website for the first time and like what they see, theyâll want a way to stay in-the-know about your brand. Create a form for newsletter signups and install a pop-up to collect customer data from your visitors.
Use a good old-fashioned signup sheet. Whether itâs at your brick and mortar store, or an event that youâre hosting or attending, when youâre surrounded by people who are into what you do, provide a place for them to sign up and learn more.
Drive signups through social media. If you donât have a substantial email list (or youâd just like to see it grow), but youâve got an engaged social media following, tap into that resource. Share your signup form on your social channels.
To add more subscribers to an existing list:
Host a contest or offer a discount. Weâre big fans of giving people an incentive to sign up for your email listâand we know that contests work. Try offering a prize for some lucky new subscriber or a discount code for a first purchase.
Make your emails easy to share. When you create beautiful, compelling emails, with a lot of valuable information people will want to share them. Mailchimp gives you features (like share buttons and social media post builders) that let the word about your emails spread quickly.
Build a landing page through Mailchimp. Landing pages offer one more way to grow your email list. Using your best imagery and content, landing pages give people a clear call to action and drive email signups way, way up
Does email marketing work?
When you want to communicate something about your brand or sell your stuff, email marketing is one of the most cost-effective ways to do so.
In fact, a 2015 study by the DMA found that for every $1 spent, email has an average $38 return on investment (ROI). When shoppers are ready to buy something, they often look for emails from their favorite stores.
Still, people receive more and more email all the time, and it can be challenging to stand out in full inboxes. Thatâs why Mailchimp gives you the tools you need to shine (plus, weâve got a lot of tried and true tips on sending outstanding emails) and develop effective email marketing campaigns. Check out our email marketing statistics by industry for more on why email marketing works.
What is email marketing, and where did it begin?
The first email, sent by Ray Tomlinson in 1971 or 1978 depending on your source, marked the beginning of the modern communication era. The message was nothing special, a series of numbers and letters that looked more like a password than a message, but its significance was profound.
The email was sent from one computer to another, traveling through a network of machines not unlike the internet we know today. Tomlinson also introduced the "@" symbol in email addresses to the world.
Gary Thuerk, a Marketing Manager at Digital Equipment Corp, sent the first commercial email years later, where the message reached a list of email addresses. And voila, email marketing was born. There were only a few hundred people on the list, but that was enough for Thuerk to claim the mantle, "Father of Spam."
Today, we're inundated with email marketing campaigns, and yes, some of it still feels spammy, but there's no denying the impact a well-crafted message can have on your customersânot to mention CRM and lead nurturing.
Email marketing helps you connect with your audience to promote your brand and increase sales. You can do a lot of things with emails, like sell products, share some news, improve your cart abandonment rate or tell a story.
With Mailchimpâs campaign builder, itâs easy to find the right email templates for any messageâwhether youâre welcoming new subscribers, notifying customers of a sale, or wishing someone a happy birthday.
A common example of permission marketing is a newsletter sent to an advertising firm's customers. Such newsletters inform customers of upcoming events or promotions, or new products.[12] In this type of advertising, a company that wants to send a newsletter to their customers may ask them at the point of purchase if they would like to receive the newsletter.
With a foundation of opted-in contact information stored in their database, marketers can send out promotional materials automatically using autorespondersâknown as drip marketing. They can also segment their promotions to specific market segments.[13]
Types
Email marketing can be carried out through different types of emails:
Transactional emails
Transactional emails are usually triggered based on a customer's action with a company. To be qualified as transactional or relationship messages, these communications' primary purpose must be "to facilitate, complete, or confirm a commercial transaction that the recipient has previously agreed to enter into with the sender" along with a few other narrow definitions of transactional messaging.[3] Triggered transactional messages include dropped basket messages, password reset emails, purchase or order confirmation emails, order status emails, reorder emails, and email receipts.
The primary purpose of a transactional email is to convey information regarding the action that triggered it. But, due to their high open rates (51.3% compared to 36.6% for email newsletters), transactional emails are an opportunity to introduce or extend the email relationship with customers or subscribers; to anticipate and answer questions; or to cross-sell or up-sell products or services.[4]
Many email newsletter software vendors offer transactional email support, which gives companies the ability to include promotional messages within the body of transactional emails. There are also software vendors that offer specialized transactional email marketing services, which include providing targeted and personalized transactional email messages and running specific marketing campaigns (such as customer referral programs).[citation needed]
Direct emails
Direct email involves sending an email solely to communicate a promotional message (for example, a special offer or a product catalog). Companies usually collect a list of customer or prospect email addresses to send direct promotional messages to, or they rent a list of email addresses from service companies.[citation needed]
Comparison to traditional mail
There are both advantages and disadvantages to using email marketing in comparison to traditional advertising mail.
Advantages
Email marketing is popular with companies for several reasons:
Email marketing is significantly cheaper and faster than traditional mail, mainly because with email, most of the cost falls on the recipient[citation needed].
Businesses and organizations who send a high volume of emails can use an ESP (email service provider) to gather information about the behavior of the recipients. The insights provided by consumer response to email marketing help businesses and organizations understand and make use of consumer behavior[citation needed].
Almost half of American Internet users check or send email on a typical day,[5] with emails delivered between 1 am and 5 am local time outperforming those sent at other times in open and click rates.[6][7]
Disadvantages
As of mid-2016 email deliverability is still an issue for legitimate marketers. According to the report, legitimate email servers averaged a delivery rate of 73% in the U.S.; six percent were filtered as spam, and 22% were missing. This lags behind other countries: Australia delivers at 90%, Canada at 89%, Britain at 88%, France at 84%, Germany at 80% and Brazil at 79%.[8]
Additionally, consumers receive on average about 90 emails per day.[9][better source needed]
Companies considering the use of an email marketing program must make sure that their program does not violate spam laws such as the United States' Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography and Marketing Act (CAN-SPAM),[10] the European Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003, or their Internet service provider's acceptable use policy.
Opt-in email advertising
Opt-in email advertising, or permission marketing, is advertising via email whereby the recipient of the advertisement has consented to receive it. [11]
History
Email marketing has evolved rapidly alongside the technological growth of the 21st century. Prior to this growth, when emails were novelties to the majority of customers, email marketing was not as effective. In 1978, Gary Thuerk of Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) sent out the first mass email[1] to approximately 400 potential clients via the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET). He claims that this resulted in $13 million worth of sales in DEC products,[2] and highlighted the potential of marketing through mass emails.
However, as email marketing developed as an effective means of direct communication, in the 1990s, users increasingly began referring to it as "spam", and began blocking out content from emails with filters and blocking programs. In order to effectively communicate a message through email, marketers had to develop a way of pushing content through to the end user, without being cut out by automatic filters and spam removing software.
Historically, it has been difficult to measure the effectiveness of marketing campaigns because target markets cannot be adequately defined. Email marketing carries the benefit of allowing marketers to identify returns on investment and measure and improve efficiency.[citation needed] Email marketing allows marketers to see feedback from users in real time, and to monitor how effective their campaign is in achieving market penetration, revealing a communication channel's scope. At the same time, however, it also means that the more personal nature of certain advertising methods, such as television advertisements, cannot be captured.
Email marketing is the act of sending a commercial message, typically to a group of people, using email. In its broadest sense, every email sent to a potential or current customer could be considered email marketing. It involves using email to send advertisements, request business, or solicit sales or donations. Email marketing strategies commonly seek to achieve one or more of three primary objectives, to build loyalty, trust, or brand awareness. The term usually refers to sending email messages with the purpose of enhancing a merchant's relationship with current or previous customers, encouraging customer loyalty and repeat business, acquiring new customers or convincing current customers to purchase something immediately, and sharing third-party ads.
