Growth Occurring During Times of Contradiction Often, brothers and sisters who are outwardly zealous do not have real growth, and those who have real growth are not always outwardly zealous. For example, some brothers and sisters who have the power to pray, to read the Bible, to be excited during the meetings, and to participate in the gospel outreach do not necessarily experience real growth. I do not say this to discourage you. Other brothers and sisters are led into situations where they have no power to pray, no enjoyment in reading the Bible, and no desire to attend the meetings. Even though it seems as if they have become cold and backslidden, they experience genuine Christian growth. Their true condition is manifested, and they realize their weakness and lack of strength to do God’s will. If a Christian has not gone through this stage, it will be difficult for him to grow. When a person first begins to pursue the Lord, he is like a sailboat sailing with the wind, moving forward spontaneously and effortlessly. Thus, it is easy for him to overcome the world and reject temptations. However, when this period of time is over, he finds that sin and every kind of temptation have returned. He feels that he should be holy and separated from the world, but he does not have the power to be separated. At the same time God will place him in outward environments that trouble, irritate, and push him beyond his limit. When a person is going through such a contradictory situation, he will feel a sense of pain. Those who are unlearned in spiritual things or who are lacking in their learning will say, “What a pity that Brother So-and-so was so good a few months ago—preaching the gospel zealously, attending the meetings regularly, and opening his mouth to pray frequently—but now he does not attend the meetings, and he does not open his mouth to pray or preach the gospel. He has drifted from the Lord.” They see only his failures but not his advancement in the Christian life Some brothers and sisters may say, “Brother Lee, you are encouraging people to backslide. You are saying that a person grows when he backslides. Does this not encourage people to backslide?” Let me ask, Does a Christian grow more when he is victorious or when he is defeated? When a Christian is met with a temptation or is about to lose his temper, does he grow more if he overcomes or if he fails? Apparently, he grows when he overcomes, but inwardly, this may not be the case. Often, the growth of a person who fails and falls far surpasses the growth of one who overcomes and stands firm. Now you may say, “Brother, this is even more dangerous. It is not good to fall, but you are exhorting people to fail and fall by saying that the growth that comes from failing and falling surpasses the growth that comes from overcoming and standing firm. Are you not encouraging people to fail or fall?” I would say, “Will you fail and fall simply because I encourage you to do so? Falling or standing firm is not a choice that we can make.
