Yet behind that unusual scene was something more meaningful. Big John’s enthusiasm for beer was not simply a publicity stunt, nor was it merely an eccentric preference. In traditional veterinary practice, beer, particularly dark beer rich in barley malt, has long been used as a supplementary health treatment for working horses. Horses have a specialised hindgut fermentation system, and natural brewer’s yeast can provide B vitamins that may support appetite and digestive function.
