captainchris 29 years ago, today. 10 In 1994 I began flying for a small boutique airline founded by energetically adventurous and serial entrepreneur; @richardbranson Virgin Atlantic started flying in 1984 with a secondhand 747 operating a London - New York service between Gatwick and Newark. By the end of 1993 @virginatlantic had a fleet of 8 747's, 12 destinations and had signed a deal to purchase 8 new Airbus A340-300's applied to Virgin in 1990, when I first arrived in the UK from Australia. However I didn't get an interview, because I'd never flown a Boeing and I only had Airbus flying experience. At the end of 1993 while flying the A320 for Air Lanka (now SriLankan), I read in Flight International magazine, that @virginatlantic were buying the @airbus A340s I immediately "booked" a long distance call (no internet in those days kids)and I spoke directly with the Chief Pilot of Virgin Atlantic. I explained how I had applied before, but had been knocked back for my lack of Boeing time, although I now considered myself perfectly qualified to fly the A340 with my 5 years of exclusive Airbus A320 experience. The Airbus was still a new aircraft and not many pilots in Europe outside Air France, British Airways or Lufthansa, had my Airbus experience in the early 90's. Ihad flown the A320 with launch customer Ansett Airlines in 1989, then Eurocypria from 1991 to 1993 and Air Lanka before my Virgin Atlantic career began. Ground school and simulator training was completed in Miami at a newly opened Airbus Training facility. I spent a memorable 8 weeks with three career and lifelong friends Paul L, Chris B, and Robbie B. We spent most of the 90's flying to Hong Kong and Narita, Tokyo before other routes to Johannesburg, Los Angeles and many more. Between us we now share 116 ears and around 80,000 hours, flying for Virgin Atlantic. Unfortunately this will be our last anniversary together of us at Virgin as Paul leaves soon to take early retirement and see even more of the World. The other 3 of us, won't be far behind him, @aviation_village
