CERN has announced that the Large Hadron Collider will be shutting down at the end of June as it enters another long maintenance and upgrade period expected to last until around 2030. For those keeping track: 2013–2015: CERN shutdown. 2018–2022: CERN shutdown. 2026–2030: CERN shutdown. The first shutdown overlapped with the rise of ISIS, the Syrian conflict, the Snowden revelations and the beginning of the geopolitical fracture that still defines our world today. The second shutdown coincided with Covid, lockdowns, mass vaccination campaigns, unprecedented restrictions on freedom, economic disruption and the outbreak of war in Ukraine.
