You won't be the first person God is going to lead, from the Prophets to Jesus to the Apostles to men of old you'll see a consistent pattern with how God leads men.
While there may be some uniqueness with people place and time but the pattern will be same. So if you're following a leading that is contrary to how God has led men through the ages you can be sure you aren't being Led of God.
The Leading of God's spirit has its character, know that and find safety.
For example, God doesn't lead into or via strife, so if strife characterizes your action you can be sure you are not being Led by God.
