From Autism Action Network: Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee Adopts Groundbreaking New Strategic Plan Yesterday, the federal Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee voted to adopt a Strategic Plan for American autism research that calls for an extensive expansion of the medical issues studied with a focus on producing answers to longstanding unanswered questions and producing interventions that will create real benefits for people with autism. Unlike earlier plans that had open endpoints sometime in an indistinct future, the plan outlines timetables, goals and deliverables to Public members of the committee have been critical of the failure of the federal autism program to develop any treatments, prevention, or cures, as well as the failure to identify causes of autism, or even to determine if the autism rate has increased even though the reported rate of autism has gone from 1 in 10,00 in the 1980s to 1 in 31 children in the most recent estimates. The Autism Action Network supported adoption of the plan for its groundbreaking calls for research into regression, dyspraxia, metabolic dysfunction, gastrointestinal issues, seizures, and other neglected symptoms of autism. The Autism Action Network would have preferred explicit language specifying research on vaccines as a cause of autism, but the plan features language that would allow for research on subjects that could include vaccines. We will continue our efforts for transparent, honest and credible research on vaccines and autism. The plan also calls for supporting communication choices for people with autism and policies to provide housing for the rapidly growing population of adults with autism. The committee consists of 23 representatives from federal agencies engaged in autism work, and 20 members of the public appointed by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. The plan was adopted with a vote of 26 yes votes and 13 abstentions. The plan is not binding on the federal government, but it provides a stark contrast to past policy and the failure to provide anything of use to families struggling with autism. Proponents were concerned prior to the meeting that the federal appointees may try to derail or obstruct adoption of the plan, but no serious efforts were made to delay the plan. Next steps include the formation of specific recommendations to the Secretary.
