NCERT Reading Strategy for UPSC Beginners (Concise) ☀️
1. Start with the syllabus
→ Read NCERTs topic-wise, not book-wise.
2. Class-wise order (recommended)
• History: 6–10 → 11–12
• Geography: 6–10 → 11–12
• Polity: 9–10 (then Laxmikanth)
• Economy: 9–10 → 11–12
• Environment: 6–10 (selective)
3. How to read
• First reading: understand concepts
• Second reading: underline keywords
• Third reading: make short notes
4. Focus areas
• Definitions, diagrams, maps, tables
• Boxes, examples, timelines
5. Revision rule
→ Minimum 3 revisions before moving to standard books.
6. PYQ linkage
→ After each subject, check previous year questions.
📌 Avoid mistakes: don’t memorize blindly, don’t skip revision, don’t rush.

🚫 MUST-NOT-DO MISTAKES IN UPSC PREPARATION (BEGINNERS)
1️⃣ ❌ Starting Without Understanding the Exam
Don’t do this:
• Jumping directly into books
• Not knowing Prelims vs Mains vs Interview
Do this instead:
✔ Understand exam structure
✔ Read syllabus line by line
✔ Analyze last 10 years PYQs
📌 UPSC rewards understanding, not hard work alone.
⸻
2️⃣ ❌ Reading Too Many Books
Biggest beginner mistake
Don’t do this:
• 4–5 books for one subject
• Changing books frequently
Correct approach:
✔ One standard book per subject
✔ Revise it multiple times
📌 UPSC is a revision game.
⸻
3️⃣ ❌ Ignoring NCERTs
Don’t think: “NCERTs are for school kids”
Reality:
✔ Most concepts come from NCERTs
✔ Geography, Polity, History basics start here
📌 Strong foundation = faster progress later.
⸻
4️⃣ ❌ Making Notes From Day One
Don’t do this:
• Making bulky notes initially
• Writing everything
Do this:
✔ First read & understand
✔ Make short notes only after 2–3 readings
📌 Notes are for revision, not for learning.
⸻
5️⃣ ❌ Ignoring PYQs (Previous Year Questions)
Very common mistake
Don’t do this:
• Studying blindly
• Not linking topics to PYQs
Do this:
✔ Topic-wise PYQ analysis
✔ Ask: Why UPSC asked this?
📌 PYQs are the syllabus in disguise.

⸻
6️⃣ ❌ Over-Dependence on Coaching / YouTube
Don’t do this:
• Watching unlimited videos
• Passive learning
Correct approach:
✔ Use coaching/videos as guidance
✔ Self-study = 70–80%
📌 UPSC clears self-learners, not video collectors.
⸻
7️⃣ ❌ Starting Mains Answer Writing Too Late
Don’t wait for Prelims clearance
Do this:
✔ Start basic answer writing within 3–4 months
✔ 1–2 questions daily is enough
📌 Mains decides rank, not Prelims.
⸻
8️⃣ ❌ Ignoring Current Affairs Early
Don’t do this:
• Thinking “I’ll start later”
Do this:
✔ Daily newspaper (45–60 min)
✔ Monthly magazine selectively
📌 Current affairs link static subjects.
⸻
9️⃣ ❌ Unrealistic Time Table
Don’t do this:
• 12–14 hours plan on Day 1
• Copying toppers blindly
Do this:
✔ Start with 5–6 focused hours
✔ Consistency > intensity
📌 UPSC is a marathon, not a sprint.
⸻
🔟 ❌ Constant Comparison & Self-Doubt
Most dangerous mistake
Don’t do this:
• Comparing with others
• Panic seeing others’ speed
Do this:
✔ Compete only with yesterday’s you
✔ Trust the process
📌 UPSC selects patient minds.
⸻
✅ GOLDEN RULES FOR BEGINNERS
✔ Syllabus = Bible
✔ PYQs = Compass
✔ Limited resources
✔ Multiple revisions
✔ Discipline + patience
