Key Highlight
India is unlocking its geothermal energy potential as a reliable, low-carbon source of round-the-clock energy.
📜 The National Policy on Geothermal Energy, notified in September 2025, provides a roadmap for developing this resource.
📍 In July 2026, India commissioned first two geothermal wells in Puga Valley, Ladakh, at over 14,000 feet above sea level.
⚡ The 1,000-metre-deep wells will support reservoir evaluation and pave the way for India’s first 1 MW demonstration geothermal power project.
🌍 India has significant geothermal potential- 381 hot springs across 10 geothermal provinces.
🔋 India’s theoretical geothermal potential is estimated at nearly 10.6 GW, with 42 sites identified as promising for power generation and direct heat use.
🌱 Geothermal energy can diversify India’s renewable energy mix and support the nation’s journey towards Net Zero by 2070.
