It starts with three woodcutters who found two mysteriously hot metal cylinders in the snow and were hospitalized with severe radiation burns, then works backward to explain the engineering, the physics, and the Cold War logic behind the machines that nearly killed them. Along the way it compares the Soviet approach to America's own strontium-powered experiments, and traces the decades-long international effort to clean up the fallout from an empire that no longer existed to look after its own hardware. What's covered in this video: The 2001 Lia, Georgia incident where three men found abandoned Soviet radioisotope generators and suffered severe radiation injuries. How the source was traced back to a radio relay system for a cancelled hydroelectric project on the Enguri river. The basic design of a radioisotope thermoelectric generator, using thermocouples and no moving parts to turn decay heat into electricity. The Soviet Beta M generator, its size, weight, and roughly ten watts of usable output. Why plutonium-238 was chosen for spacecraft like Voyager, Cassini, and the Curiosity rover, thanks to its light shielding needs. Why the Soviets instead used strontium-90, a cheap, plentiful fission product from reactors and the Mayak complex, despite needing heavy tungsten shielding. How strontium chemically mimics calcium in the human body, making it especially dangerous if it escapes containment. Mass production of these generators at the Baltiyets plant in Narva, Estonia, and their deployment along the Northern Sea Route. The parallel American SNAP program, including SNAP-7A and SNAP-7D buoys and the nuclear-powered Baltimore Harbor Light. Why the American program was abandoned while the Soviet program was industrialized at massive scale. What happened after the USSR collapsed in 1991, leaving hundreds of unmonitored generators without maintenance or oversight. Cases of theft, vandalism, and loss documented by the Norwegian foundation Bellona, including incidents in Kola, Kazakhstan, Chukotka, and the Sea of Okhotsk. The peaceful uses of strontium-90 in industrial thickness gauges and medical eye applicators, compared to the scale of the Beta M units. The international recovery effort after 2001 involving Norway, the US Department of Energy, Lawrence Livermore, Rosatom, and the Kurchatov Institute. The replacement of generators with solar power and the final scale of the cleanup reported by Rosatom and Bellona.
