Artwork Title: Grandmother of The Scots Medium: Oil-on-digital Time: +- 20 hours Theme: Scottish folklore Upon the Lochs and Lands of Scotland there is perhaps no more notable a God than Cailleach Beira. It is she who crafted the land of Scotland itself and is Mother of the many Gods and Giants who call this land home. So ancient is she that she has long lost count to the winters and years she has been here, though by her own word she has seen when land was water and water was land. Some of this shifting however was no doubt crafted by her hand during her creation of the Scottish landscape, though she herself may have forgot due to time. Hyperborean Radio. I was commissioned to paint this bewitching display of Scottish myth & folklore. Cailleach Beira, a rather important figure to the Gaels, become the subject of much concentration and attention to detail as I did my best to portray her accordingly, shedding light on the many elements which make up the many qualities of her being. I drew inspiration from vintage photographs (mostly from the 1880s) of rural ladies of Scotland (in the fields) - specifically elderly - to get an idea of how Beira, Queen of Winter, would appear as an "old woman" or "hag" (without giving it away too much) within a Scottish setting. The project itself was a lot of fun because I really want to hone my skills of painting the Gods, folklore, legends, heroes, etc., and with each one, I get better. Now. of course, being Scotland, I chose a stormy or brooding atmosphere 😆 (I couldn't help myself) overshadowing the Scottish coastline. Though, it does create an interesting contrast between the light and dark tones, thus creating the required depth. A Scottish wild cat, loyal to Beira, I thought would be appropriate because most people often depict her with an owl or stag, but they do not really scream Scottish, whereas a Scottish wild cat does. I would like to take a moment to bring to your attention a wonderful artist who has made it his purpose in life to paint as much of our folklore as he possibly can. His name is Neale Rundgren AKA AethelwulfArt. His work largely takes inspiration from Scandinavian Folklore and Mythology (his own culture) though his work delves into German, British, Slavic, Iberian and other folkloric traditions and heritages as well. Good evening, everyone! I hope you’re all well? 😁 Yule is upon us! How about a Tomte for your loved ones? No! What if they’re telling stories to woodland critters, riding a fox or accompanying the Yule Goat? I have three Tomte paintings for sale, looking for a good home with a good family. Who wouldn’t want the sacred Scandinavian household spirit to look after your homestead? Just try not to forget his porridge or expect mischief. Hehe! I thought I’d do a little marketing for upcoming Yule. I’m still working on Cailleach, albeit almost complete – just a few things left to do. I’m also working on another Tomte painting, but I’m not sure whether it will be ready in time for order. Luckily my paintings are not really seasonal. There’s still a lot to do before the end of the year. Therefore, bear with me. I’ll try to get a few more paintings up on my site for sale before the year’s end. Title: Father Rhine Medium: Oil-on-Digital Time: 30+ Hours Theme: German Folklore By whose jars the river spawns high in the Alps, at times flowing tranquil and wonder-beautiful and other times raging and deadly, many a romantic tune was sung of the Rhine and many a lament for those whose final resting place was deep within it's watery depths. But though the bones at his bottom may be countless, so too is the life Father Rhine provides, his waters form the life giving blood of Europe alongside his sons and daughters; Main, Neckar, Töss, Moselle, Lahn and a manifold of others across the Aeons. Hyperborean Radio Phew! It's been a while, but I'm glad to say I have finally finished this really awesome painting of Father Rhine. A river god! The personification of the river Rhine. I was meant to finish him about two weeks ago because I was hoping to speed paint this painting; I painted the background in two days, which was a mistake. All I did was accelerate burnout. Nevertheless, I managed to get it done. What did I learn from this painting? Quite a lot. I think it's one of the few instances where I took my time to shape and refine human anatomy through careful study. In the beginning, there were a few proportional problems, e.g. his fingers were too long; I somewhat gave him ET fingers, but thankfully I noticed that before I went too far. The other thing I learnt is how to paint feet submerged in water. The kingfishers were the fun part and, quite frankly, my favourite aspects of the painting. Next up is Cailleach, the matriarch of Scotland. Then all commissions will come to a close. I'm not going to accept anymore for November as I would love to resume my own projects. I have paintings which I started a year again that have been neglected. So, I'd like to finish them before the end of the year. No river is more famed, more beloved nor more steeped in Legend and Lore than The Rhine, presided over by He Who Flows, Father Rhine. - Hyperborean Radio My Sketch of Father Rhine for Hyperborean Radio. I've already begun painting him; I can't wait to see the final result. There are quite a few pre-existing paintings of FR from old masters, as well as the occasional monument built in his honour. Hello everyone, I hope you're well?! Man, it's been a while since I've uploaded something, but things are really hectic my end, with 13 projects in the works - commissions included. Nevertheless, I have finally finished this painting (commission). It was fun, extremely challenging, but above all else, a major learning curve, studying various architecture and stone carvings therein. The style of choice is Neoclassicm, mixed with a bit of Rococo and pre-Raphaelite, though I tried to mimic the old sepia colour palette - usually applied to landscapes with old ruins of an ancient civilisation. Although there is the odd, invisible issue here and there, I think it is a reasonable effort. The painting was well-received - which is what matters. I do feel as if my painting/artistic ability has improved tenfold; therefore, I should be able to apply what I've learnt to future paintings. The process will be uploaded tomorrow, followed by my sketch of Father Rhine for Hyperborean Radio. Hopefully I'll be able to wrap up all projects by the end of the year. Stay tuned! Hello everyone, A quick update: Yeah, I'm still alive and breathing. Things are really busy my end. This month I'm working on a few commissions and other projects, too. The next couple of months are going to be really exciting as I have (I think) 13 sketches ready for painting, though I have made a tentative start on a few of them. There are 2 paintings on which I've been working for nearly a year, but I am going to take my time with them, because I want them to be perfect. When painting the gods, I must paint them out of love, pride and passion instead of doing a half-hearted job - hence why I'm not rushing them. Next month I have two exciting new commissions from Hyperborean Radio: one on Father Rhine and the other on Cailleach Beira, Matriarch of Scotland. I'm looking forward to seeing what I can create. I should likewise hopefully finish The Moonraker's book cover by the end of next month. Otherwise, it's all go until the end of the year. - PS: I'm also painting landscapes, forests and even wildlife in between projects because I know not everyone wants folklore stuff. Wayland the Smith English Folklore The Wise Goldsmith, Dexterous Craftsman, Unsurpassed Master Smith, Elf Friend Few Gods are more renown, more famed than Wayland, none more skilled or justly prideful than The Grand Smith himself. His story begins when he began to show talent for metal work at a very young age and eventually took on an apprenticeship with a local Tinker, where before long he acquired great skill in his new profession. Soon his name spread far and wide, after seeing such fine craftsmanship from one so young, one of the local Smithing Gods then took Wayland into his care. After having seen his new instructors wyrd method of simply adding or subtracting metal from his work as needed to accomplish his given goal, Wayland thought about this and wondered how a mortal might do the same. After much thought and experimentation he invented forge welding so that mortals might perform the same feat, combining multiple pieces of metal together to form one seamless piece. Eventually after having learned all that he might and his master then excitedly exclaiming that he had taught Wayland all that he could, Wayland then moved on. Hungry for more knowledge in the craft of metalworking the Young Master Smith would then go on to the Dwarfs to learn the secrets of their hidden craft. Excerpt from Hyperborean Radio. German Folklore Mother Earth has always been here beside us, never having left our side Her story may have been hidden beneath Saints & Madonna's, or even The Great Seer Notburga, yet the Church, for all of their supposed power, failed to rid the people of this most beloved God. This God who leads the Wild Hunt atop her White Stag! Hops crowning its regal antlers, 'Ertha herself astride his mighty back in all of her glory wielding a riding crop of sacred Valerian Stalk. Good evening, I hope you're all well? The Leshy, ruler, grandfather and steward of the Forests across Slavia. The health, age and size of the forest directly effecting the scope of his power. As the deeper into the forest he goes the greater his capabilities, in a grand and powerful forest The Leshy can be taller than the tallest tree or mountains and his eyes can be as stars in the sky looking down from the constellations above, yet at the edge of his domain The Leshy is as small as a blade of grass.
