| 10 | After a big trading loss, your first goal is not to make the money back.
It’s to become the trader who would never lose it that way again.
Someone messaged me after spending five years building a 1 crore account. Then, in one month, he lost 90% of it.
He felt lost. He has a wife and young kids. He knew he made mistakes, and his question was basically:
How do I start over? What do I need to relearn?
A lot of trading improvement isn’t learning more. It’s unlearning.
Bad habits get built over time. Sometimes overconfidence even gets rewarded for a while, which makes it worse. Then eventually the market exposes it and you have to go back through your process and figure out what needs to change.
I couldn’t honestly tell him which book to read or exactly what he needs to study first without knowing what he already understands.
But if I were rebuilding from the ground up, I’d focus on three things:
Directional bias. Before worrying about entries, learn how to determine which side of the market actually has the advantage.
Entry technique. Have real conditions that need to exist before you take a trade. Not FOMO. Not emotion. Not “this looks like it has to bounce.”
Risk management. This one sits above everything else.
Risk is the one part of trading we actually control. So we better become elite at controlling it.
Position size. Invalidation. Predefined risk. Knowing what you’re willing to lose before you ever enter the trade.
And I’d journal the decisions, especially the bad ones.
Why did I enter? What did I believe? What would prove me wrong? Did I actually follow my plan? What emotion was involved?
That’s where you start finding the habits that need to be unlearned.
Don’t make rebuilding the money the mission. Make rebuilding the trader the mission.
If you do that, an incredibly expensive lesson can still change the way you trade for the rest of your life. | 581 |
