Specific Principles of Kashmir Saivism. Author(s): B. N. Pandit. Language: Sanskrit+English. Philosophy: Kashmir Shaivism. Specific Principles of Kashmir Saivism throws a clear light on the aspects of Trika Saiva philosophy that remain either untouched or not well-clarified in other schools. Starting with a discussion of the theistic absolutism of the Trika system, B.N. Pandit guides us through Abhinavagupta's critique of the primary cosmogonic theories of his time-the materialist realism of Samkhya, the momentary-idealism of Vijñānavāda, and the vivarta theory of Advaita Vedanta-enroute to establishing the Kashmir Saiva theory of theistic reflectional manifestation as a unique and supremely logical cosmogonic system. Like the topic of cosmogony, several other important principles are unique developments of the Trika system. These topics include: Spanda, Śaktipāta, the classification of beings, aesthetics, the notion of Śabdabrāhman, the relation of the five pranas to the four states of consciousness, and Trika yoga. This book illuminates these topics on the basis of the writings of the primary masters of the school, including Vasugupta, Kallata Bhatta, Somānanda, Utpaladeva, and Abhinavagupta. In addition, the author has included a chapter on the vilāsa principle as expounded in the Saiva philosophy (Abhinavaśaivadarśana) of Acārya Amṛtavāgbhāva. This work also includes an index, extensive glossary, and appendix of Sanskrit quotations, making it an invaluable source book for beginners and scholars alike. B.N. Pandit is an eminent Sanskrit scholar, holding a Certificate of honour, awarded by the President of India. A retired professor of Sanskrit from himachal University. Dr. Pandit is an internationally respected authority on the Trika Saivism of Kashmir, with numerous publications in Sanskrit hindi and English. his Svātantrya Darpana (Mirror of Self-Supremacy) and translation of Abhinavagupta's Paramārthasāra (The Essence of the Exact Reality) are also published by us.

ASPECTS OF KASHMIR SHAIVISM. Author(s): DR B. N. PANDIT. Language: Sanskrit+English. Philosophy: Kashmir Shaivism. Kashmir Saivism has been the most valuable contribution of Kashmir to the Indian culture. It is the best and the highest spiritual philosophy that has ever been discovered and expressed in the world. Its literature on the theory and the practice of spiritual philosophy is very rich, but most of that is available in Sanskrit, and is not therefore within the reach of common man in the world. Some scholars of the present century have tried to express the principles of Kashmir Saivism in English but have not succeeded to a sufficient extent in that task for want of a deep insight in the abstruse Sanskrit works of great authors like Somānanda, Utpaladeva and Abhinavagupta. Kashmir is however proud of having a Sanskrit scholar of deep philosophic insight in Dr. B. N. Pandit. In addition to some books he wrote a good number of papers on Kashmir Saivism. Those papers appeared from time to time in different magazines and periodicals. We requested him to collect these for publication and he agreed to do so. We got some of them and hope to get many more. The ones we got we are publishing those in the form of this book under the title ASPECTS OF Kashmiri Śaivism. We the people of the valley of Kashmir are highly for tunate in having among us a great Saiva saint and scholar of high merit in the form of Swami Shri Lakshman Joo at Ishvara Ashram, Nishat, Srinagar, who has been shedding light on the secrets of Kashmir Saivism across big oceans by imparting instruction to disciples coming to him from many parts of the world. he has been very kind to write a foreword to this book. The book contains twenty five papers out of which twenty four have been contributed by Dr. Pandit. These research papers on Saivism deal with several aspects of that school of philosophy. Some of these throw light on the historical aspect of that thought, while others deal with its philosophic principles. The theoretical and the practical aspects of Kashmir Saivism have been discussed in different papers. Some of the papers are devoted to the aspect of comparison between the philosophic principles of Kashmir Saivism, on the one hand, and those of some other schools of Indian philosophy, on the other hand. The aspect of Sadhana as taught in the Trika system of practice, has also been discussed in detail. A few papers are devoted to the aspect of comparative merits of Kashmir Saivism and a few to the aspects of the special technique, special method and general character of this important school of Indian thought. The aspect of its relation with the enchanting environment of the valley of Kashmir also has been touched in one or two chapters. The collection in this way throws light on many important aspects of Kashmir Saivism. We are grateful to all persons with whose co- operation the publication has seen the light of the day. We are extremely grateful to Swami Lakshman Joo for writing the foreword to this book. Our thanks are due to Dr. B. N. Pandit for sparing these papers for publication at our request. We express our thanks to Mr. Lokesh Kaul for looking after the printing of the book and also to Mr. Mohan Raina, an efficient artist, for the drawings of the cover.

The Mirror of Self Supremacy—Svātantrya Darpaṇa. Author(s): B. N. Pandit. Language: Sanskrit+English. The work is divided into eleven chapters. The first of these presents a brief history of the origin and development of Kashmir Saivism. The next chapter deals with its metaphysics and ontology. The third one, discussing the cosmogony of Kashmir Saivism, throws light on the nature and character of the thirty-six tattvas of Saivism, taught in Saivite scriptures. The absolute theism, pro- claimed as the very essential and basic character of the eternal and absolute monistic reality, has been discussed philosophically in the fourth chapter of the work. The fifth chapter depicts and refutes the atheistic principles of non-believers. The fundamental philosophical principles of several important schools of Indian philosophy have been discussed briefiy in the sixth chapter of the work. The seventh chapter is devoted to the criticism on such schools of thought. It points out some non-justifiable lacunae existing in the ontology of such schools hke Nyāya, Sāṃkhya, Vedānta and Buddhism. The very important theistic principles of the absolute self-dependence and the sportive nature of the monistic absolute reality have been discussed in the eighth chapter of the work in hand. The next chapter (no. 9) is devoted to throw light on the character of the seven higher and lower types of living beings, residing in the higher and lower planes of the phenomenal existence. The topic concerned has been mentioned in Saivite scriptures, but has been clarified in Kashmir Saivism alone. The tenth chapter throws some light on the details of the theological practices of different Standards as discussed by Abhinavagupta in his Tantrasāra and Tantrāloka in accordance with Trika System of sādhanā. The last chapter, being the concluding one, expresses the ideal viewpoint on the human life as maintained in Kashmir Saivism while giving equal importance to both its secular and spiritual aims. The work presents thus a clear outline of Kashmir Saivism defining several aspects of such school of Indian philosophy. It can serve as a useful textbook and can help in going ahead in the study of Kashmir Saivism, as it deals briefiy with all the important aspects of that school of philosophy. — B.N. PANDIT.
