There are many red flags, including:
👎🏻 Entire team hides behind anonymity
👎🏻 Front shell company "1984 GROUP LP" incorporated 2015 in UK
👎🏻 Closed source.
👎🏻 Mines on your machine.
👎🏻 Spam bots/humans promote it on Twitter.
👎🏻 Graffiti spraying on walls in Prague, Czech Republic promote it (apparently a failed attempt to go viral)
🚫 No transparency whatsoever.
Our investigation uncovered clues that some of the developers are located in Iceland. 🇮🇸
Specifically we uncovered the name "Asgeir Jon Asgeirsson" who has a LinkedIn profile associated to an "u.is" email address ("u.is" is Utopias website).
When we reached out to Mr. Asgeirsson we got initial contact, but as soon as we mentioned Utopia we were ghosted. See the Twitter 🧵 for details.

According to the file unified_payments.csv they had an income of $130,582.70 from June 2019 to January 2020 via Stripe. It does not say how much was earned via alternative payment methods.
The data and opsec failure shows how easy it is for law enforcement to uncover who is behind such service. Only a subpoena to the payment provider - not breaking encryption or forcing backdoors - is needed. ⚖️
