Class 6th Science Chap 6 Long answers Ans 3. All living things reproduce. Reproduction is the capacity of an oragnism to produce young ones or new individuals of its own kind. Plants reproduce by means of seeds or part of their bodies like roots, stems and leaves. A cat gives birth to kittens, dog produces puppies and a plant produces seeds, which grow into an adult cat, dog and tree respectively. Frogs, snakes, fish, mosquitoes and birds lay eggs from which the young ones hatch after a period of time. Unicellular organisms reproduce by the division of the cell into two new cells. Thus, living things make copies of themselves. In this way, they multiply in number. Non-living things cannot reproduce. Ans4. A baby grows into an adult man or woman. A small bird hatches from an egg and develops into a large adult bird. Seeds germinate and grow into plants. Growth in living things is a permanent and irreversible process. All living things grow from a single cell. Cells divide and increase in number. Growth of living things is internal. It is interesting to note that growth of animals stops after some time (months or years) but plants continue to grow throughout their lives. Ans5. Plants are fixed in the soil. They can exhibit only slight movements, for example the touch-me-not plant (mimosa pudica) curls up its leaves when it is touched. Flowers like daisy and lily close at night and open in the morning. The sunflower always faces the sun. The whole body of small microscopic plants like the alga Chlamydomonas moves about in water.
